Hey Gang Just thought I wuld show off a couple Pics of my M8 for the small AFV Group build. Pretty much OOB Will eventually be putting it in a Dio but until then I thought I would show you guys and ask for any constructive critisism. I tried splattering the mud on the sides “with a flat brush” as you can see but it didn’t turn out quite as muddy as I wanted it. It will be early spring of 45 when the Dio will be taking place so there will deffinately be spring muds.
Again any better ideas for showing splatered mud would be great.

Dan’s suggestion of using a tooth brush is the best method I know of. Distance will determine how tight the pattern is and if you flick it with your thumb in the direction you want it to go in you get the proper splatter patterns. It means some juggling of your model but the effect is very interesting. Pop your wheels off and you can build up mud splatter under the fenders and in wheel wells.
Nice job! Mike’s on the money as far as I’m concerned. Th eonly thing I’d add would be a dusting after it’s all done.

I always get good results in mud spattering by attaching a towline to the shackles and pulling the model behind my 4x4 through the swamp down the road. For some reason there usually isn’t a lot left of the model afterwards. Maybe the toothbrush method might be better, do you rinse off the mud before you use it to brush your teeth again?

Subfixer, I thought about dragging it thru the small ditch near my house but I think my homeowners assoc. would dissaprove of me driving in the field and ditch with my SUV. They really have no sense of humor when it comes to stuff like that.
About the toothbrush, That Idea was just in a recent issue of FSM wasn’t it. DOHHH!!!
Nice work Rich. Looks like it will be a neat little kit when finished.
Maybe a little splatter on front from following another vehicle or from passing vehicles due to rest stops. Thicker splatter up inside the wheel wells and suspension as Mike (Renarts) said will really look great even though it will cover some detail. Don’t forget mud thrown back from the front wheels will stick to the front of the rear fenders and side of the hull too.
As they say, you either want showroom condition or real life.
I know that this sounds crazy, but for texture, try a water based paint solution with white glue pastel chalks, and water…you don’t want rock hard mud. You want some mud that you can carve off if you don’t like it. The chalk is for texture and a little color. The paint is for the main mud color, and glue and water solution 50/50 holds it together.
BTW…I love the kit, but this is my little trick for some high vis 3D mud.
Rich, nice job on your M8. I’m going through the learning stages of trying to make my builds look a little more like they’ve been run hard, and abused a bit. the dirty affect is one of those things I think just takes some practice, and in my case luck. I kind of lean toward the suggested toothbrush affect! I have played with that a little, and I like the results. semper fi, mike
