Mach 2 1/72 Douglas A2D-1 Skyshark. This a/c took the A1D Skyraider airframe and installed two Allison turbojets in the lower hull, side by side. Each drove a prop, counter rotators, Although a very fast and very promising concept, pure jets soon outclassed her.
For all the crud that Mach 2 gets for their kits, this model was as satisfying to me as any I’ve built in a while. A flashmonster for sure, but after cleanup it really represented it’s subject well. I decided early on to build a real cockpit, which after a bunch of research revealed itself to be the original Douglas Skyray set up. I scratched it up without too much trouble.
Nice build, Bill. The canopy looks better than the usual for Mach 2 ande the shape looks pretty good too. So the cockpit was adapted from the A4D? The canopy does look similar, never noticed that before.
I still can’t believe they gave you all six props with one chord… excellent job all around as its a beautiful looking bird. I think you’ve convinced me to build a whole set of early cold war USN Aircraft: the Mauler, the Skyshark and the Skyraider…
I should clarify. The seat is the same, a Douglas designed ejection seat. The general layout of the consoles and the tub look quite similar. The Skyray tho had radar, which reorganizes the main instrument panel. And the Shark had two engines, with the attendant doubling of the guages. Also the Shark had provision at least for an optical gunsight.
Yes, Mach 2 kits can be built. John, it’s close to time to break out those Mariners. Just gotta finish my helicopter…
Very nice job, bondo. I was scarcely aware of this aircraft’s existance. I think that the only one left is in a museum in Idaho. I am wondering why the Navy doesn’t buy it and place it in their museum in Pensacola.
NICE. The A4D was the first prop aircraft built by Douglas to have an ejection seat. Douglas called it an extraction seat because it fired a slug straight up which pulled the seat out of the aircraft. I was also called the Yankee Seat by crew that flew it.
I’ve been looking foreward to this one too. Neat plane and a great build. Looks like it would be nice if they had included some better stickers though, the white seems a little see-through.
