My first home brewed zimmerit (pics)

Slapping the paste on the Tamiya Tiger (late) and having fun. I’m using Milliput and the Tamiya zim tools, so far so good…

Steve

Wow, that looks great. How long did it take you to do just the turret? Does the milliput work well? My only experience is with the Tamiya Polyester putty

Looks great so far. Have you used any product besides the milliput and if so, how does it compare? I’m building up the courage to try zimming by hand.

Great work! Way better than my first!

Hey Jason-

It’s only HALF the turret buddy, and it took two hours. Milliput is super stuff, but you’ve got to follow the rules 'cause the whole shebang can turn into a mess in a second. Masking is a must, plenty of talcum powder and a calibrated eyeball is necessary. The MAIN thing is you must rough up the surface, or the milliput will not adhere and as you’re making impressions the putty will lift off the surface!

I like these results, but it’s a chore and I’ll be glad when its over.

Steve

That is great looking zimmerit. I wish I had the courage to use Milliput to make zimmerit, I’ve only been using Cavalier. Show us more when you get it finished.

thats lookin’ pretty cool Steve!![tup]

MAN that is truly awesome!!! Well worth the effort you are putting into it!! I am doing the Tamiya Panther early version with the included Eduards PE Zimmerit, and I thought that was a chore…of course it is my first tank also. lol Thanks for letting me peek at what true Zimmerit looks like!

I’d say it looks good. It has that irregular and random look, too.

That looks just plain awesome…

What more can I say? Can’t wait to see the finished product!

The zimm job looks pretty impressive Steve. It sounds like using the “milliputty” is a bit labor intensive, but then using any of the recommended putties is alot of work from what little I’ve tryed. Thanks for showing us another way too zimm, you can never get enough tips on projects like that.
Semper Fi, mike

Nice scratchbuilt technic

That is awesome!! Very inspiring!! The way you describe it and the way it looks it makes me think I could do that. Maybe i’ll try someday but thanks again for the inspiration.

First off, it does look awesome. Nice and random looking too. I have to ask what tool your using, because the putty looks like a waffle pattern of sorts. It should be smooth, not perforated. Don’t get me wrong, it’s an excellent job.

Eric,

Yes, I noticed the “perf” thing myself. I’m using the Tamiya .05 and .07 zim tools. Actually, when you’re not doing a micro close up like my pics, you can’t really pic up on the perforations. The tools have little sawteeth to bite into the putty. I don’t know buddy??? When you look at it with the naked eye, it looks pretty cool.

Steve

That’s good enough for me. I was thinking of getting the Tamiya tools also and start practicing my zim. I will definately save a zim project for a very rainy day. Resin zim can sure be expensive!
