My first attempt at detailing cockpit and engine - pics

Hey everyone

Here’s some pics of my Hobbyboss wildcat f4f3 cockpit and engine . Let me know what you think. This is only my second plane build ever and my first attempt at trying to add some detail. I realized I forgot to remove paint when glueing in fuel tank, oops… I attempted making belts using a bread tie, figured the wire in the tie would let me shape it. I ended up breaking one of the belts after attaching so i had to reattach. Kind of screwed that up a little. It was a blast to build so far though. I went for a dirty cockpit look. Used colored pencils for detailing and a graphite pencil with some polishing to give a worn metal look.

Anyways, back to work.

See ya everyone

Tough to see in the tiny pictures. But what can be discerned looks pretty good.

Here’s a link to my flickr page, pics are bigger there. I need to find a better web hosting site for pics.

I included instructions for posting from Flickr when I wrote this:

Overall, looks good, but you should know that the Wildcat’s cockpit is pretty much invisible once the fuselage is glued together.

Also, advanced word of warning - the canopy on the Hobby Boss F4F-3 - at least the two I build - doesn’t fit. Doesn’t align height-wise with the windscreen (and if you raise it to, stands proud of the fuselage spine) and is too thick to be posed open. I ended up going with a vacform replacement.

OK, let me try again,

Thanks Doogs. I was doing some dry fitting last night and discovered this. Oh well, i’ll know whats in there, besides that, detailing the small stuff is the fun part of building for me. Trying to make things from stuff laying around the house…I defenitly learned alot from this build so far. My next cockpit should be a huge improvement. I already have ideas for new belts. I also read one of Hans ideas for detailing panels I want to try next.

Also thanks for the heads up on the canopy, i’ve never masked or painted a canopy yet so i’m a little nervous about that one.
