multiple builds

Hi everyone,

Thought I’d share some comments.

I’ve always been a one model builder, not even looking at another kit until I’m totally finished . But I recently joined my local model club and we have got to build a model for our challenge. Well now I’m building two at once and am really enjoying it. I don’t know why I did’nt do it before. I’m even thinking about doing another, yeah, three at once, wow!! Ha, Ha.

How many kits on the bench do you guys have on at any one time?

Thanks for reading-Leo

I’ve got four on my bench right now, including a wooden ship model that I’ve been working on for nearly two years. I like being able to go from project to project depending on how the mood strikes me.

I think I originally started doing multiple builds when I was literally waiting for the paint to dry on one model and started another one for something to do in the meantime.

I try to keep to less than 3 at once… I run out of room on the bench… I also don’t pack a kit away until it is done… Which makes me push through even the bad ones. I am big on finishing everything I start in this hobby.

This is a hobby really well served by working on multiple kits at once. Work on another kit while something is drying on the other.

I hear ya bud. I used to focus on one build at time myself, avoiding the LHS at all costs. But up till about 2 or 3 years ago I found myself building 4 kits at one time. Call it multitasking, I don’t know. For me anyway, I would also imagine this holds true for many out there, if you’re building more than one kit at once you don’t have to stop building at all, you are always at a different stage on the other kits. Cockpit on one, fuselage on one, gear on one, etc. If you get miffed with one kit you can put it down and pick up something else. Plus its a really good way to block life out of your head when you’re trying to paint the fire buttons on a 1/48 or 1/72 aircraft joystick!

At the moment 6, 3 planes, 2 subs and 1 space vehicle.

if you include garage kits (figures) and replica movie props, then I loose count.

E…

Always more then one. While I’m waiting for something to dry on one I can be working on the other. That is when I have the time to do any modeling at all.

I try not to start one kit before I’ve finished another, as otherwise I lose focus and nothing gets completed.

Usually, if I get hung up on a kit, you know that loss of mojo you get with those pita kits, I just stick it in the cupboard and come back to it. Often up to 2 years later![:|]

I work on a number of projects simultaniously. (up to four at once, any more and I fear they may stagnate).

I now have one long term project that gets worked on occassionally, but other smaller projects come and go.

The system seems to be working for me, as it gives me a lot more scope on what to do to suit my mood, or time limitations.

I usually have two or three going at any one time, but sometimes as many as four. Any more than that and I worry about forgetting where I was! [proplr]

I may have as many as 3 started, but I usually focus on finishing one & only work on the others when I’m waiting for things like paint to cure on the primary build.

Got about 25 OTB…

I’ve got 4 mustangs going right now. I like to do multiple’s of the same subject at the same time. I’ve only done this a few times now but I like it. I did, well, havent finished my 2 B-17’s, and now I’ve got the mustangs. It all jusy depends on my mood and the ideas that pop up as I go along…at any one time. It’s caotic but fun.

I have four (P-47, F-22, C-117, B-24)…I am about to start a group build with my two sons, daughter, and family friend of an F-86…Does an unfinished Sturmtiger count? Problem continues to be that my purchasing habits exceed my ability to keep up with completion rate…in other words, by stash continues to grow exponentially!!!

I haven’t actively worked on anything in a few years but have 16 that I know of, all with “extra” detailing. From a 1/48 B-29 to an F8F Bearcat, 1/48 and 1/35 UH-1C’s, two each.

I had 11 going at one time. That number as dropped to 5 since my Mustang collection is finishing up. The 11 at one time included 9 Mustangs (down from 10, when a wing on the Twin-Mustang got seriously wrapped and decided I really didn’t need it), a 1/48 B-17 and a WWII cruiser for a club build. Now I’m down to the last three Mustangs, the B-17 (missing some of the minor stuff and weathering), and another WWII cruiser for the club build.

I think in the future, I’ll do no more than 3 or 4 at a time, depending if a couple are of the same subject.

I generally try to work on one at a time, although I have done multiples before when I was building either similar aircraft or different versions of the same aircraft. I did 5 P-40s at the same time and 2 Corsairs at the same time. The P-40 builds went well considering all the clutter I had on my work bench. The Corsairs practically put themselves together (go figure, they were the Tamiya kits). I also did a Monogram B-26 alongside an Accurate Miniatures B-25 recently. They were similar warbirds so I figured it’d be a good idea to do them together.

But mostly it’s just 1 at a time.

For a long time I would just crack open a kit when the mood moved me, so somtimes I would have 3 or 4, sometimes more, of various genres (aircraft, armor, ship and figures). I was in on 2 group builds at one point. But I started getting burned out. I felt like I was getting nowheres on ANY of the kits, and it was getting discouraging. So one day I decided enough was enough. I shelved EVERYTHING…Group build kits, figure I was working on, the M1A1 Abrams and the USS Essex. I decided to pick one and ONLY one kit, and I told myself from here on out I would not start a new kit until the previous one was finished, or the current model was at a stage where I could do very little day to day and had free bench time (for example, right now I am working on a Dragon Panzer III and am at the stage where I am applying filters, which take perhaps 20 minutes to do, but require at least 12 hours of dry time) Either way I have managed to keep myself in check, and for it my modeling enjoyment has considerably grown.

Out of the 50 or so kits I have on my shelf, I am almost positive that at least 70% have had some sort of work done on them…LOL.

At the moment I have just 1 on the bench, but when the silly season is over, I may start on a TSR2. Normally I have a few on the go as it does break the builds up. While one is painted and drying, you can do another one. [:)]

Typically at least two at a time, but never more. I’ve tried 3 at once before, and found that quality began to suffer. Not to mention I simply don’t have the room for more than 2 kits in build stage.
