Mud, and a lot of it

Hi, I was wondering if anyone had a good techniques for creating mud spray on the bottom of tanks. I normally build airplanes but I am building Tamiya’s Sherman and would like to weather the heck out of it. I tried thinning squadron whit putty with acetone and applying it with a stiff bristled tooth brush but I am not too sure of the results. I would love to hear any secrets you guys might have. I normally build 1/48 planes so this is a change of pace for me

Hello.

I use a mixture of acrylic paint and celluclay or sulptamold with fine dirt and static grass. You can thin it or thicken it with water or Iso and apply it thick to the under carriage or use an old toothbrush and spray a thinner mixture up on the sides.

Another way is to take pigments and mix them with an acrylic medium or white glue and thin it in the same way as the mixture above. You could also use acrylic paint instead of the pigments.

Of course I tend to weather abit on the heavy side but I build everything with the mindset that it will be in a diorama sooner or later.
