Hey all, i’ve been meaning to post some pictures of this build i did… about a year and a half ago. was one of the first things i ever tried to weather. i did a lot of reading on the subject, which i think paid off. the checker pattern was a bit of a experiment, and could have been straighter, but hey… they were fighting the empire… there’s no time to worry about neatness… [:O]
That is way cool.The B-Wing was never one of my favorites,but as a kit it’s a blast! I too practiced weathering techniques on the same kit.A job well done for sure.[t$t]
The B-Wing was my favorite fighter from the movies. I still have my vintage Hasbro (or is it Kenner?) B-Wing for the action figures, but my 7 yr old now has it and has played rather rough with it.
It is the one kit I wished Fine Molds did in 1/72 scale.
Love the look, and I agree with the guy who said that Finemolds should make this kit. How is the MPC(?) kit in terms of fit, detail, and affordability?
It is a small kit, maybe a dozen pieces in a small scale (1/144?) based on the size of the pilot. It is a snap together kit with a cockpit designed to rotate and wings that pivot into position. No landing gear, just a display stand. Original MPC issues came with clear plastic canopy and display base. Reissues packaged this kit with the small scale X-Wing and TIE Interceptor in the mid 90s and included dark tinted clear parts.
Not sure what color clear parts the most recent AMT/Ertl issues come with. There’s also a gold plated version from the 90s as well.
Detail is soft, especially around the cockpit pod, but overall a decent model for a snap tite.
I liked how this one turned out so much my self that i rounded up the other three rebel fighters and did them as well (the Y-wing is still in work) but the X-Wing and A-Wing both turned out pretty good. i used simliar colors on those two with paint schemes more fitting of their “class” (if you will) of ship. ill post some pictures of those soon.
The kit itself is pretty good for its size. very good in my opinion for a snap tite model. i bought this as a stand alone kit, as with the other three. they did do a kit, as rob said with the X-wing, B-wing and tie interceptor all together as well. im not sure of the time frame of this kit, but it had the darker plastic stand and canopy, as did the other three kits i bought. Finished its about 7 inches long. on another note, all of the fighters in these kits are in different scales…
As for the cost of the kits, i watched ebay like a hawk for these kits to come up. once they did i just bid on them but not exceeding more than 10 or 15 bucks. most recently i got the Y-wing for like $4.99 i think. another thing about ebay is knowing how to search stuff. sometimes it seems (as with the Y-wing) that people list things with weird descriptions and in weird categories. most of the Y-wing MPC kits i saw went for $20 to $25 bucks… i didn’t want to spend that much. but then one popped up not listed under model kits but under something like collectibles… no one was bidding on it. the seller had lots of good feed back, the kit was sealed. shipping was reasonable… i didn’t understand. maybe i got lucky and nobody was looking for a MPC y-wing that week, i don’t know. my gain though.
I too wish finemolds would do a B-wing… i’m sure its coming. im watching and waiting for a well priced Y-wing and Slave 1 of theirs to show up on ebay…
I agree that savvy shopping on eBay is the best way to go. Just remember, look at all the ones ending and if it goes above your comfort zone, there will always be another one listed tomorrow or next week.
A place I scored the Fine Molds Slave 1 kit by happenstance was Target.com. I was searching for the price of Legos Star Wars sets for my son and they had the Fine Molds kit listed under Japanese Collectables. I got the Boba Fett version for something like $30 back in 2009. It is an initial issue with diecast frozen Hans Solo. I still have the packing slip in the box, but it doesn’t list the sale price. It was crazy low because it was on clearance.
The Jenga Fett Slave 1 I bought for $40 back in 2008 on an armor modeling website’s buy/sell/trade forum.
Bottom line, you just have to shop around to find the best deals.
Always been a fan of the Blade (B) wing fighter, have two vintage Kenner and one of the later modern Legacy Collection Dagger Squadron fighters.
I did build this version in my childhood and remember it being quite a small kit, so the shear amount of detail you have crammed in there is totally a pleasure to see. The paint scheme, as you say, isn’t far out, but is an excellent job. The weathering is also a job well done too. Did you use dry brushing for the paint chip / wear?
I did the metal chipping and wear using dry brushing, i also painted some of the heavier areas. i’ll have some photos of the X, A and Y wing up soon. If you liked the scheme on the B you should like those too.

I’m experimenting with Maskol technique at the minute for paint chips and so forth, and have painted on paint chips with a fine brush. I’m liking the results of the Maskol more than painting on top…
