Hi People - have a growing itch to scratch having not built anything [bar Spidey & Venom] for at least 20 years now - thing is I don’t wanna go out and get something that is reminiscent of Airfix kits from the 70’s. Can anyone recommend a model/manufacturer where the quality of the kit is just gonna blow me away?
I’m looking forward to suggestions in any genre but I used to get the most satisfaction from WW2 dioramas…
First of all [#welcome] to the forum Jason, nice to have you here.
You didn’t mention if you’re in to aircraft or armor kits, so for an aircraft kit that will just about build itself and will blow you away with the detail, IMHO you can’t go past the Tamiya (1/48) P-47 Thunderbolt. For armor, well I’m not an expert by any means, but the new WWII kits from Dragon are just superb and yes you will be blown away at the detail. The DML 1/35 PzKpfw VI Ausf E Tiger I (Initial Production) in particular is one kit that comes to mind.
Happy modeling
Cheers
Darren
I can only speak to Aircraft kits, but the Accurate Miniatures 1/48 TBF/M Avenger kits & the Tamiya 1/48 P-47D kits are truly State of the Art.
Regards, Rick
Im working on the Tamiya Corsair F4U-1D an its great,it comes with a moto-tug
tamiya, afv club and dragon make great armor. their new stuuf will blow you away, mainly dragon at that. Tristar is also very nice.
If you are into armor, I suggest you build the Tamiya T-55. It is an excellent kit and is close to perfect OOTB.
I have two that come to mind IMHO. 1st, the Tamiya Type 90 Japanese tank…Wow! the 2nd, the AFV Stuart M3A3…great kit.[2c]
Thanks Guys, good suggestions and good subjects too. You develop certain favourite subjects over time and its amazing how most of the suggestions here include things that have stuck in my mind since I was a kid - Corsair F4U/Thunderbolt/WW2 tanks etc., so it’s very encouraging. I’m leaning toward 1/48th aircraft, a modern car, or Military diorama. What I want to avoid is going and buying a kit only to find it’s an old kit in a new box[!]. Once again - thank you for taking the time to respond. I will post pics when I’m done too, of course ;>)
For aircraft, ICM’s 1/48 Spitfires are great.
the trumpeter 1/32 flanker.
In armor; Dragon’s 3-in-1 Tiger and Halftracks are state of the art. Cost is quite kind also.
I’d have to say if you’re into aircraft like I am then do yourself a huge favor and have at least one Accurate Miniature kit in your collection! Boy you will NOT be disappointed! When I finished up the cockpit of my Dauntless I placed it on one half of the fuselage. It sat like that for a couple of weeks because I couldn’t bring myself to glue the second half on because it would cover up all the amazing detail. All the Accurate Miniature kits are like that.

PS. Welcome to the forum!
Well I can’t add much to what has been said as I agree with all of the above statements… (well I’m not much into armor but recently bought the DML Tiger mentioned and when I looked in the box I was pleasantly surprised!)
For aircraft look for Tamiya, Hasegawa, Accurate Miniatures… there’s others but those are the main 3 in a decent price range. On the first two (Tamiya and Hasegawa) if the model is 11 dollars it’s probably worth 11 dollars. Their A6M2 Zero comes to mind. While not a bad kit it lacks a lot of detail. The upper end kits will cost you from $20 to $38 for 1/48 but won’t leave you dissatisfied! Surprisingly Monogram Pro modeler kits are good too! They are usually reboxed Hasegawa kits for half the price of a Hasegawa. I’ve built the Ju-88 night fighter and the Ju-87 R2 and loved both kits!
Good luck to you, and welcome to the forum!
My vote goes to the Tamiya JS-3 1945. The kit is absolutely phenomenal in terms of fit and detail. From my experience, all the more pricey model kit’s from Tamiya all share one thing in common: the great fit and detail, however, DML is really starting to catch up in terms of fit and quality of their model kit’s recently and are impressing modelers more and more with every new release.
Edit: By the way, welcome to the forums.
