Mosquito gear bay color...

Hello, I’m about to embark on the Tamiya Mosquito fighter bomber. The instructions say the interior gear bays should be silver (aluminium?). Is this accurate or should they be the interior color? I know absolutely nothing about the Mosquito other than it was really fast and mostly wooden. Thanks, Joe

http://www.arcair.com/awa01/001-100/awa038-Mosquito/00b.shtm I always thought they would be the same as the exterior color, but that almost looks like lacquered aluminum to me (bottom row 1st on the left) It seems for certain though the bomb bay is interior color. Now keep in mind this is a Canadian built bird, so they may have done things differently

Good question. Something I would like to know also. This photo of the Canadian Mosquito indicates the wheel well was lacquered aluminum (though this could be a later repaint) and the doors and outer surfaces were interior green.

But this photo is even more interesting.

It appears that the rear wheel well was interior green.

Hope someone comes up with a more definite answer.

On most unrestored examples the bays are Grey Green, sometimes the sidewalls Aluminium. The undercarriage itself was Aluminium.

Thank you… I’ll go with the grey green and aluminium.

I’m currently also building a 1/48 scale DH Mosquito, and as with most British aircraft,

“Interior Green”, FS 34151, is what this & every British plane kit has indicated to use (that I’ve built).

AL Fiero - the color in the pics looks very similar to Testors Model Master RAF Interior Green (Acrylic # 4850, Enamel # 2062) than the Interior Green you’re using. FS 34151 Interior Green looks too green/yellow compared to RAF Interior Green. I plan on using RAF Interior Green for all my WW2 RAF aircrafts.

The official/correct name is Grey Green or Aircraft Grey Green BS 381C 283 and is not the same colour as ANA611 Interior Green.

Do a search on Aircraft Grey Green BS 381C 283. You will find a wide range of colors and it all depends on what one would feel is the best match. I can still use RAF Interior Green and simply weather it using Black Detail Wash.

Other colors that identifies as Aircraft Grey Green:

Vallejo #102 German Field Grey WWII

Humbrol #78 Cockpit Green

Tamiya XF22 RLM Grey

Gunze Aqueous #70

Even if you physically do swatch samples on a piece of paper of each paint brand color, you will find them in different shades. It all comes down to the modeller’s choice.

RAF Interior Green and US Interior Green arte two completely different shades.

This could not have been more perfectly timed…I’m building a Mosquito as well.

Thanks for the links and colors.

Thanks for the swatch comparisons, stik.

Great input folks. Diggin’ the samples. My formula for RAF interior grey-green is XF-71 Cockpit Green with a touch of XF-66 Light Grey to well…“grey” it up a bit. I don’t know how correct it is, but this looks about right to my eye. Here’s my Spit MK. IX to see how that mixture looks…

Looks good, Joe. I like it!

It’s funny, but when I posted the links to the photos above and said “interior green”, I realized later that it might be confused with the “US interior green”. However, I reasoned that it was an RAF aircraft and people would understand I was talking about “RAF Interior Green” (ModelMaster color 2062).

Guess I should be more precise. [:)]

Gary

That really looks good lawdog. I like it!

What a thread! Just another example of the good help that’s available here.[Y]
