Monogram F-100D-Maj. Don Schmenk's Hun

Years ago, I read a reader’s letter to FSM commenting on a recent article about the F-100. The letter’s author was a retired Air Force pilot who had flown the Hun in Vietnam. I had some question to ask of him so I got in touch, and as part of his reply, he mailed me a kit of the plane that featured the markings for the aircraft he had flown in Vietnam. The kit sat in my stash for a loooong time, and I finally got around to finishing it a couple years ago. Here she is, photographed, again, at our local airport (the same session that produced the Mirage F-1 pics). Thanks to Maj. Schmenk!

Very nice Hun!:13:

I seriously thought the first 3 pictures were real, very nice job!

Fantastic! And what a story! Is he still around for you to send him pictures of the finished product?

Thanks guys! Here’s Maj. Schmenk:

The Hun is one of my favorite jet aircraft. I have 3 x 1/48 Monogram F100Ds at home, 2 x 1/72 F100F (Italerie) & 4 x 1/72 F100D (Esci & Italeri) in my stash. I am hoping to add the 1/48 F100c Thunderbird (Monogram) to my collection.

At a hobby show this past weekend, I found a copy of Detail & Scale Vol.33 F-100 Super Sabre for $15. I had seen it at Squadron for twice that plus shipping.

Great build and great photos!

Very nice all the way around. You really should submit this to the reader’s gallery.
