Monogram 1/72 Hu-16 Albatross

I built this for the Grumman Iron Works group build. I always liked this kit when I was a kid, so when I saw the chance to build it again, I decided that I’d do something different with it. The kit is typical of '60s-era Monogram kits - sparse if no interior details. So my resolution was to scratch-build an interior and to light it up.

The interior scratch-building went pretty well; the lighting effort not as well. The lights do work but given the cramped interior and limited visibility inside, it’s difficult to see all the work I did now that it’s buttoned up. Oh well.

Great job on the ooold kit. You did her justice.

Regards, Rick

BEAUTIFUL model!! A great looking model of a great looking airplane. Great job, Rich.

Great looking build Aggieman! [tup][tup] You did a wonderful job on the paint job and the interior looks great too. We all know its there even if you cant see it.

Excellent job, Aggieman. Neat subject matter and I like how you went all out on it. Truly a modelers model.

Nice work on the old amphib. The interior work certainly turns it into a totally different model.

Aggieman,

Having built this kit several times, I must say that you have truly done it justice! Your scratchbuilt interior is outstanding work and really brings it to life, as does the lighting! [tup][tup] I still have one in my stash, and, with your permission, I will use your interior shots as a blueprint for mine. Absolutely first rate work both inside and outside!

Thanks to everyone for their comments. This was overall a fun build, and it is certainly one we don’t see often on these pages.

Brian,

You are welcome to use my work as a blueprint. What I did was inspired by some diagrams that another poster, Jeaton, provided me. Here’s what he gave me.

Nice build! I have one of these that is slowly rising to the top of “the stack.” Hope it turns out as well as yours has! Good work.

Thanks a million, Aggieman! That is going to be a big help! John has more info on aircraft than I can ever hope to find, he is a super resource!

Brian,

Agreed, John is awesome.
