Monogram 1/48th Superfortress

Hi,

Here is my model of the B29. It was totally hollow engraved, and each panel was covered with selfsticking aluminium foil (alu tape)

What do you think about it ?

Really feel free to revert, it will be my pleasure to discuss about that time-eating model !

Best regards

Looks like time well spent! Very nice outcome. How long did it take to assemble? At some point I would like to build a 48 scale B-29. How was the kit (since it is the only one on the market!)?
Thanks for posting pictures.

Wow !! That is one fine looking B-29 , Great job!! , Thanks for sharing !!

Hi,

Well not considering the many pauses that have happened between the beginning and the very end of the project, it took, say, a whole year… for I really take my time when modelling. But the basic kit is truly good, shapes are ok, internal details are top Monogram ones, the worst was the re-scribbing, but most of the lines are easy to follow straight ones.

If I were to the beginning of the kit, I would carry one as pleasantly as I did !

Thanks for your congrats !

Richard

Very nice!! There is nothing better than real metal!!!

Jeff

Dang that is a great looking Superfortress! I have one waiting to be built but because of room it has to stay in its box[:(] Again that is a really great build.

WOW !!! Your Superfortress really rocks…
What a nice BMF !!!

Cheers,

Jürgen

PS: I saw you have the Heller F-16 (Belgian) kit, watch out with that one, I’ve maid it for my Belgian collection, and it’s not so good: raised lines, bad detail, inaccurate decals…

Where does one find this “aluminum tape”??? Me want! Me want!!!

Wow!!! I know what it takes to foil a model, and you certainly get my respect for what you’ve done with your bomber. Rescribing an entire model is also no small feat. I can’t imagine the hours you’ve put into this kit, and it shows. Stunning build, absolutely stunning. Thanks for the look.

Jerry

Richard.
You have there one beautiful B29. The aluminium panels turned out great.

Very nice the metal looks great.

Hi Richard,

[:)] I can relate to taking a long time to finish a model. I also work slowly.

Your B-29 looks fantastic! The figures look outstanding as well. Was there an engine fire on the right-most engine?

Regards,

Hi,

Happy to see you enjoy !

Regarding Echolmberg’s asking where to find the tape, I bought it in a DIY supermarket, there are lots of 'em in France, as in the States I suppose.
I did not use any bare metal foil dedicated to modelling, and was pleased with the result anyway. Nice to see you share my opinion.
The tape is really cheap (about 2 EUR, meaning around 2 $ for a 5 meters long roll), quite easy to use, but really fragile though far more scratch resistant than any of the alu paints I’ve ever used.

Thanks 4 all !

Richard

You bet there was ! I decided my superfort’ was to return to base having suffered an engine fire caused by some (six or seven) jap shell bursts before the fighter was shot down by the upper turrets !

It bring something different to the model, and to say th least, a very combat proven look ! [B)]

Beautiful work on the B-29. Absolutely stunning.

WOW! great BMF!
i might be wrong, but would that be that shiny while in service?
i don’t know. oh well.
great model anyway![:D]

That’s really cool! Didn’t notidce the engine fire until you mentioned it.

Couple of Q’s if you don’t mind?

  1. Now did you get the tape to conform to the turrets, cowlings and other contours?
  2. How did to get the panel shading affect?

Thanks in advance for the tips.

Hi Richard,
your B-29 looks incredible! I think your aluminum finish is great, thanks for sharing.

Darren.

An eye popping effort. I could only hope to have one turn out the great. One of the best that I have seen lately. Now if I could just get the one I have started!

1-About the turrets, they were not covered with tape, but were airbrushed with Humbrol ref 11 (silver), wich metal tone is very similar.
2-The panels were added one at a time, and on the wings, you can observe an important tone difference between each panel, which was obtained by gently sanding the surface of 1out of 2 panels, with “laine d’acier”, which could be steel wool (?). This simply gave the toned down effect I expected.

the under surfaces were painted gloss black, as observed on some nightbombing B29s from 1944.
