Monogram 1/48th McDonnell-Douglas OA-4M Skyhawk II

I started this little kit on 20 June 2015 for the Monogram Mafia III Group Build, and have just now completed it. I’ll declare this my official first completed build for 2016. This is a great little kit, and is very accurate, except, in my opinion, for the raised panel lines. No really difficult obstacles to overcome on this one. The fuselage halves fit together very well, as did the wings. Where the wings fit to the fuselage left a small gap at the front edge on the underside of the fuselage, but I left it as is, as I would’ve caused more damage than it was worth trying to fill the gap. It’s not that noticible anyways, unless you flip it upside down. The rear seat needed quite a bit of trimming on the top of the headrest to get the canopy to fit over it, as the canopy is too thick for the scale, but it’s another thing not that noticible unless you’re looking for it.

This is a 30-year-old kit, and the decals showed it. But, they did ok. The jet intake “BEWARE” declas wrinkled on me a bit, even with lots of MicroSol and MicroSet, but, it’s another of those unnoticible things, unless you’re looking for it.

This is the first kit I’ve ever used Alclad II Lacquer Gloss Klear Kote and Klear Kote Flat. I must say that I was extremely impressed with both. I have always used Future floor wax (I ain’t getting into calling it PFM!), and was decently satisfied with the results with it. So, accordingly, I was a bit apprehensive about using the Alclad products. But, I had always heard good things about Alclad, and I was able to get these dirt cheap from a HobbytownUSA that was going outa business, so I figured, “Why not?” The Alclad coatings turned out to be very easy to use, and gave me much better results than Future. So, I think I’ll be using Alclad from now on.

Anyways, enough with the typing, and on with the photos…

Any comments, good, bad, indifferent, etc. will be greatly appreciated! It’s how we get better with our modeling skills.

Gary Mason

Nice Scooter. Pics in a bit closer on a plain background would be great. Really set off what looks to be an excellent build.

Nice job, Double D! I have one in the stash, would like to convert it to a J.

Nice build Gary. I remember building that when I was a teen

Wow, exceptional job! Great paint job. What kind of AB do you own?

Toshi

Duomo Arigato, Toshi! I own a Paasche VLN double-action airbrush that I bought at Hobby Lobby about 8 years ago with a 40%-off coupon. I think it cost me about $70 after the coupon. It’s a great airbrush.

Unfortunately, I don’t have the room to set up a separate photo shoot area in my room, and it takes too much to move everything from my bench to do that as well. I do wish i had the room for that, though.

Thanks, Mississippi! It’s a great kit. You’ll like it.

Thanks, Tempest! Unfortunately, I was an adult when that kit came out! I’m showing my age now! [proplr]

nah. You’re only six years older then me

Thats a fine looking Skyhawk you got there.

Oh, and I wouldnt be surprised with the wrinkles. After 30 years, nothing, and no one, is exempt from wrinkles. lol.

Nice looking bird! Keep up the good work!

I’m an A-4 fanatic and your OA-4 is superb. Semper Fi devil dog.

Heh! My wife thinks SHE is!

Thanks, scorpr2!

Thanks, ranjerj! Semper Fi, Marine!

DD, I’m an Army ranger (101st Airborn), but I did a TDY with a Marine Recon unit and they treated me like one of their own. A Gunny Sgt. gave me what I consider the greatest complement of my life. He said I would make a great Marine. Currahe (we stand alone together) Marine.

Nice build. [:)]

Oops! My mistake. You used the term “Semper Fi”, so I thought…

Anyways, thanks for your service, ranger. Glad to know that you served with a Marine unit at one time in your career. I served at Cherry Point, NC, back in the late 80s to mid-90s. Never got the opportunity to serve with any other branches during 11.5 years in. Except, of course, a Navy unit in the Persian Gulf…

Thanks, spiralcity!
