On the advice of some guys in AMPS and IPMS here I bought some of their Odorless Thinner to use for washes. Earlier today I tried making a wash using Model Master Enamel Burnt Umber, as soon as I added the thinner, the paint itself balled up and turned in to a glob, keeping seperate from the thinner. When I tried stirring it, it just helped the paint join up more and seperate from the ML Thinner. Does this stuff only work with oils or what? Anybody on here to have any advice or knowledge to pass on.
Yes, I have had the same experience with Mona Lisa. Still use it for my oil paints. I don’t know why odorless spirits won’t mix with the enamels–they usually contain smelly mineral spirits, don’t know why they wouldn’t mix. What I use instead is Testor’s enamel/airbrush thinner in the blue can. It contains other solvents besides mineral spirits. (at least it works for thinning Humbrol’s Matte Cote).

Humbrol thinners work great for oils and enamel washes. That way you don’t need 2 different brands around.
No worries. I still have a couple of one gallon cans of generic hardware store paint thinner to take careof all my thinning needs for the next few years. I was just curious about the Mona Lisa stuff after that experience with it. So if I do decide to expand my paint types dabble in oil paints for washes and figure painting, it should be goood with that medium?
Sorry, no advice, but I had the exact same experience with MM and Master’s Choice odorless. Inexpensive “odorless” from the hardware store worked just fine. The Master’s Choice also did work with Humbrol.
