Modern U.S Navy colors

Hey guys, I normally build aircraft, but have taken a break and started on some modern U.S. Navy ships. What are the main colors for a Kidd class destroyer, and the Big “E”? I am talking about the vertical and horizontal surfaces.

The paint guides list 3 different paints to mix for the vertical, but I was hoping there is a FS # that will match, cause I hate mixing. If you have to touch up you never can match perfectly.

Is there a fleet wide standard for all ships or is each ship or class different?

Thanks for the help.

Wade

im going to use Intermediate blue acrylic from gunze for my USS New Jersey. looks like a pretty good match for my references

Verticals are “haze gray” and horizontals are “deck gray”. These colors are fleet wide except for subs which are of course “boot topping black”. And, unless of course, the ship is straight out of the shipyard, there is a multitude of varying patches of faded and fresh shades where constant maintenance requires repainting.

Thanks guys. Sub fixer are you at Newport News or Norfolk Naval? I used to live in Yorktown.

Wade

Norfolk Naval, America’s first and finest!

For modern USN, use the following Federal Standard colors:

Haze Gray: FS 36270 (26270 for scale effect)
Deck Gray: FS 36008 (26176 for scale effect)

Jeff Herne

Thanks Jeff you certainly are a big help.

You can have accurate modern USN colors right out of the tin in our Colourcoats enamels, all matched to the proper FS color:

M03, Modern USN Haze Gray;
M04, Modern USN Deck Gray;
M05, Modern USN Flight Deck Gray;
M06, Modern USN Antifouling Red.

There’s no minimum order requirement, and we ship worldwide.

Right–I thought I had signature enabled, but apparently not.

Thank goodness somebody has these colors straight from the factory! I spent about an hour last night following the links and checking several paint manufacturer’s sites for FS colors. Us poor folks in the “sticks” can have a real tough time finding the “real deal”. Looks like I might as well start ordering paint along with the PE. I’m running out of glass jars for all these custom mixed paint colors. I haven’t found a LHS that has any of the factory colors in inventory within 200 miles of my location. (no PE either)

I just can’t understand why hobby shops that stock 30 or 40 high dollar ships don’t carry PE for them and proper paint.

Can you say “mail order”!!!
