I build mostly WW2 airplanes in 1/48th scale. My modeling began in the early '50’s starting with Aurora’s 1/48th WW2 planes, with a few from Hawk and Lindberg thrown in. Fell in love with those airplanes and wanted to know more about them and the people who flew them. Been mostly 1/48th WW2 since then. While I do like some of the early jets such as the F-80, F-86, and F9F, I am not really interested in any military aircraft that came out after the early '50’s. The only other airplanes I am interested in as far as being modeling subjects are aerobatic airplanes ( thank you Airshow Models ! ).

Neither is ‘better’ to model, just whatever takes your preference. In regards the full size thinkg, as far as engineering and performance, obviously the modern aircraft are better, otherwise they would not have been developed! If a spitfire was as competitive today as it was in 1940, we would hardly need to have spent money on a Tornado…
I prefer modeling modern jets, but also anything used by the RNZAF since 1937.
I look at it from a slightly different perspective. I model only 1/72 USN/USMC a/c of ALL eras. This keeps my unbuilt kit inventory down and I can cut across all the demarcation lines we tend to adopt; nothing wrong with them, this is just my preference. F4B-2 to F-16N!! (so far).
I am not a “pro” by any means. I have always been an S.O.B. (straight outta box) modeler. I don’t use photo-etch or resin add-ons, and the toughest “conversion” I have ever done is to modify the fin on a P-40E to make it into a P-40K. I know many modelers who have been building for 1/4th the number of years that I have who are much more skilled than I am.
Thinking of resin, I AM planning on getting a set of the early straight cowl flaps for my Tamiya P-47…[:D]

Hmm… Let me see… Old planes are seat of the pants, basic and purposefull… New planes have everything right down to the complemantary mints on the ejector seat cussion (there´s an idea for you crew chief out there to get a funny look from the pilots…).
Let me put it this way. If its not on it, it won´t break. Hence my Land Rover has no radio, aircon, electronic ignition, more lights than neccesary, navigation system more advanced than a road map… As opposed to my boss´ BM-Trouble You: Sat Nav accurate up to 3 streets and never, ever takes the same route twice, aircon that had it in the shop more than its been used…
If i had to fly in a war I would do it in modern aircraft.
But if I wanted to do it in style I would fly a WWII aircraft.

Well I build anything that carried an A-XXXX serial number. PLUS anything odd such as a C79.
But its best if you model whatever you like!!
