Olifant (Which is started), and the Ratel 20 are it.

Go armor!!

Hey - can we slide Somalia in here? I’m trying to get Ian to do another “Technical” on a 1/32 pickup. [:D]

I’m gonna strat with an infantry patrol - '70-ish Rhodesia, either RLI or RAR, so I can work out how to model their kit properly. Hopefully, I’ll manage to get a Rhodesian Universal Carrier in there. (twin MAGs on pedestal mounts - yes, please!)

My wife drew the line at the Super Frelon, tho…

Can I do a SAAF Canberra? Airfix in 1/72? Or SAAF Shakleton? same?

Sure! Canberra is a twin engined jet, Shackleton four engined maritime patrol SAAF used both. Rhodesia also used the Canberra, and the DeHaviland Vampire. Not all of them had markings so cammo is the only thing you need worry about. I moved the date to 1999 for Somalia era subjects. Lets get more people in here.

EDIT: Great job on the badge!

Well, I’m in of course. My Technical diorama WIP had a small old Time magazine featuring Borack Obamaa’s face to show it was more or less present day, but I can remove/replace that, so the diorama fits the 1999 time guideline.

Anyway’s I’m guessing my diorama is too far started to count as an entry, still lots to do but I’ve got a start, so I guess instead I’ll just enter the last 2-3 militia figures I have to build/paint and add into my diorama.

Jus tfor inspiration…here’s my dio so far in various stages of completion…1/35:

My technical before pigments, made a world of difference on a dusty vehicle:

A couple figures:

At first I wasn’t going to get into this one, but then I saw the badge. For those of us who remember the Rhodesian Army, that badge is a must-have. So I’m in! WOO HOO!

Trouble is, I’m a WWII German guy, and have not the foggiest idea what to model. I guess I’d lean toward either a truck or an arty piece. Any suggestions there?

Being a WW2 person is not a problem. The SADF, Portugese, and Rhodesian forces ALL used the British 25 pndr field guns. Or you could do an older model Bedford or Unimog. Go to my forum in figures, and start looking at the links. there is a ton of info there. GREAT to have you with us! and WELCOME.

Also for those of you who do build WW2, Besides the above mentioned kits, the jeep, and T-34/85 were used in some of the conflicts. I am sure there are more, and I will do some digging. I know also the M-8 and M-20 were used in the Congo by Mercenaries employed by Kantanga. Also the Dodge series of trucks, but not sure about the command/scout car.

Ian, looks good to me. Change the magazine if you wish, and you could make a Blood Diamond movie dio of the RUF in Sierra Leone. Works for me. Great job. I just recieved some new kits from South Africa, so I am drooling on my keyboard, excuse me for a bit.

To tell you the truth SteelRudi, Blood Diamond and RUF is exactly where this dio was aimed. I saw the movie about 2 months ago, and it sparked my interest in modern Africa. The soldier in the back of the technical was meant to loosely represent “Captain Poison” (The main RUF “bad guy”) with his beret and sunglasses. It later evolved into a somalian setting, and now, I figure I’ll just remove the Time Magazine, so it could be nearly anywhere in Africa, recently modern.

If you can, check out the 1978 movie “The Wild Gease”. It is loosely, and I use that word heavily, on “Mad Mike” Hoare’s 5 Commando in Kantanga in the mid 1960’s. There is also another movie, called “Dark of the Sun” with Rod Taylor. It takes place in the Congo, and is also about Merc’s. There are alot of movies out there if you know where to look. Again the Dio is great. Hope to have some of my stuff up soon. Working on the Olifant now, and have another on order. Got another great DVD with today’s shipment from SA. I also have two Rhodesian flags to hang on the wall of my room.

OK, I’m in on this GB with enthusiasm, but you know it took a minute or thirty. The word war in the subject line is a bit of a dose of reality, good thing, enough said.

I am going to build a 1/72 AMT, (ex Airfix, ex Frog) Avro Shackleton MK.III. In SAAF Coastal Command livery, based on the 1722 (not original #) at the SAAF Museum. This kit has been in the stash for a while, waiting for the right debut.

The Shackleton was a coastal patrol bomber based on the famous WW2 Avro Lancaster. The engines were four RR Gryphons, each powering counter-rotating props giving extreme range and duration, like the Russian Bear.

I can’t start until next year, but the subject is a good one and I think you need an aircraft.

Bill

When you build it, keep me informed. I have one too, but am not building it for the present. We have a plane!

I think I will build the G5 to get my feet wet, then work on the other kits, that I have mentioned. It is a resin 1/72 scale affair from Baxmod. Can’t get them anymore. Will post pic’s as soon as I can located a camera.

Okay here are more kits that can be built, and modified to this build.

There are many subjects, that can be modeled, and if you need help, just ask. I or my compatriots will be more than happy to assist you.

Do you have the 1/48 Fouga? I hear it’s the hardest kit ever. I’ve got a 1/72 Heller one which is going to be part of my 6 day war collection, which isn’t part of this GB, correct?

Any information on the T-28 you mentioned? I’m assuming that refers to the Soviet world war II Tank put to use by an African Country? How extensive would modifications have to be from a WW2 version? Thanks. Or where you refering to some other kind of T-28?

No I don’t have the 1/48 Fouga. I have heard unkind things about the kit though. And the T-28 I am refering to is the North American T-28 Trojan up-armed as a strike craft for COIN operations. You could do a late model T-34/85 OOB for the most part. The SADF captured a ton of them in Angola. No the 6 day war doesn’t count as Africa. If it was the 73 Yom Kippor war, I might change my mind on that. The Israeli’s crossed the Suez into Eygpt during their counter offensive, and cut off about 20,000 of Sadat’s troops.

Thanks abt the Magister. i was just curious what you thought of it. No I wouldn’t count 1967 war either, although Israel did bomb some Egyptian airfields. Subject for a whole other GB I suppose. I’m trying to find a set of decals for the Shak, and I let you know when I start. Wasn’t that a cool pic with Table Mtn. in the background/

I might look into what kind of armor (previously made and used by other countries) has been put into service by those countries, I’ve just gotta find some kind of vehicle lists for some modern African countries, or atleast some pictures (easier said than done, of course!) I’ve always liked the look of sand colored paint flaking off to reveal the original dark green or whatever was underneath. Just some thoughts.

Bondoman

I thought I recognized Cape Town! I know where you can get decals for the Shak. Let me make a few checks, and I will post it here tonight.
