Modeling Cars You Own/Owned

Would be cool to model my first…a 78 Buick Century. It’d be a practice in rust techniques to be sure! Wonder if anyone makes one?

Unfortunately, i do not think any of the cars that i have owned were worthy of any company to put in a kit. The closest that i can find is a 6 year earlier version of my '77 Celica.

I would love to build a kit of the favorite car I owned; a 1993 Cutlass Supreme SL. Nothing special, but dang I loved that car.

Are there any Datsun model car kits around? My dad owned a Datsun back in '81, but I don’t remember the specific make/model of the car.

I know there’s the Z cars and 510s out there and Hasegawa makes a pickup.

I have a my-own-car build underway. It is a '51 Ford with a home-made grill, so I can use any Ford 49-51. I am using a '49.

Tamiya makes a great 240Z

Nice. Ive not been able to find models of the cars Ive owned. Like my 68 Mustang ragtop!
I can find some in diecast or hot rod versions that have hood scoops, roll bars, etc.

Love these builds! They bring back some memories for me too.

I have built 4 models of cars I/family owned. First is a 41 Plymouth using the AMT kit and a four door body from Motor City resins. The first car I ever drove. Second is a 1965 Corvair fourdoor hard top using the AMT kit and a Modelhaus resin body. Third is a 1968 Pontiac Firebird using the Revell kit and the ohc 6 engine from the Amt 1969 Firebird kit. The fourth was my 2012 Mustang using the Revell kit and painted Testor’s Grabber Blue.

@Tcoat Love that Datsun you built!

I have done a replica of our 1988 RX7 TII. No clue who made the kit anymore. It’s a curbside, so no underhood details, but a nice kit. I added some details, like the sunroof hold down straps in the back hatch area, as well as the hanger for the exhaust system that’s really obvious to anyone who’s ever crawled under one of these cars. The wheels aren’t factory, but I think they were the ones that came in the kit.

I have another replica of a car we’ve had in the works, but it’s been stalled trying to find headers to fit. It’s our 1995 Camaro convertible that was my wife’s mid-life crisis car. It had a LT4 engine, and 6-speed. The car was a beast, and the scale replica is proving to be a ‘beast’, too.

Great looking RX7. I always wanted one, but never did get one.

I owned a 1968 Pontiac Lemans with a vinyl top. Absolutely loved that car. Forced to sell it during the mid '80s. I didn’t want to, but I couldn’t afford to store it/restore it. I’ve been looking to model it but all I can find are GTO models, which are close, but not quite right. I guess with some scratch building I could make it work, but I don’t know if I’m ready to try it yet. Maybe someday.

Thank you! It was a fun driving car too. Not sure you’d want one, though, they tend to gather in flocks!! We had I think 5 or 6 at one point in time. One 1st Gen, and 4 or 5 FCs.

I built my daughter’s '77 Camaro a while ago.

The 1:1 model.

The 1/24 model. It is a kitbash of an old MPC '77 Camaro kit and the AMT '70 1/2 kit to add some better details, including the engine compartment and engine. I used a couple PE sets on it and resin Edelbrock valve covers and air cleaner (to match the 1:1 version) as well.

The first vehicle I owned was Honda 305 Scrambler motorcycle, that I bought with money from working as a hired hand on a dairy farm, for two summers ('68 & '69). In '71, while the Air Force, I found Revell’s Honda Scrambler model and started to build but stopped. In 2020, I rediscovered it and decided to finish it. After finishing it, I found out the model was of a 250 Scrambler, but looks just like my 305.

My re-entrance to the hobby is to resume building a replica of my 1998 Mustang Cobra. I bought this AMT 1997 Cobra model as a starting point. But 1998 had different wheels. So I’ve modified some wheels and tires from a Tamiya Cobra R kit to get close. I have enamel paint in OEM Bright Atlantic Blue to paint it with.

One thing I’m struggling with is what state to model the car in. As you can somewhat see from the photo, I modified the car significantly with completely different rear suspension and wheels, exhaust, and other things. My plan is to model it with lowered stock style suspension and OEM 1998 5-spoke wheels, since scratch-building the suspension will bog me down and model wheels like the mesh ones in the photo are probably NA.

I used to own a Sunbeam Tiger, which was a basket case of a car in need of complete restoration which ended up out of reach for me. My car was similar to this one, but not nearly as nice looking. I bought an AMT kit at a swap meet years ago.

Lastly, I want to build a model of my latest car build, my 1977 Datsun 280z. A quick search tells me this will be a costly kit! But I’ve got time to find a deal somewhere.

Hiroboy makes just about every wheel ever produced. Not cheap but super quality.
