Model Shipways "Dapper Tom".

Micro mark had a one day 20% off sale today. I bought my table saw.

Hi ;

Hey , I am in the middle of a Kidd build . The ship is okay but the thing needs more bulkheads to keep it stable . When I recieved it it was built up , but the hull had sucked in between the bulkheads . I had to add five bulkheads and then plank in 1/16 " mahogany .

It makes a great looking ship model , But beware ! The aftermarket parts can be very incorrect ! Tanker - Builder

Kidd me, what? Billy The Kidd?

I really do not see the sense of POB. A ship normally has anything from 10 to 50 stations. Make a frame for each; fine.

The POB models I have looked at don’t usually follow that- they just sort of split the issue and set a general profile.

Oh, BTW the Campbell book came in. Over to my America build for the bowsprit soon.

My MicroLux table saw shipped today!

I’m very excited. Going to be a fun Winter in the shop.

A friend gave me The Bomb Ketch (Lion’s Whelp) by Marine Model Co. including the instructions. The rigging is very complicated and hard to understand. Does anyone have any experience with rigging this model?

Good news on the Dapper Tom front. Model Shipways has just reissued the kit - with a basswood hull and Britannia metal fittings. And a new, detailed instruction book by Ben Lankford.

I haven’t built a bomb ketch, but I can recommend a couple of sources. George Campbell’s Neophyte Ship Modeler’s Jackstays will introduce you to the basic principles of rigging. That, in conjunction with the kit plans, may give you all you need. It’s available from Model Expo ( www.modelexpo-online.com ) at a very reasonable price. There’s also a fine, very detailed book about the bomb ketch Granado, by Peter Goodwin, in the “Anatomy of the Ship” series published by the Conway Maritime Press. That one is, I’m afraid, out of print. Used copies can be found on the web, but they arent cheap. I did find one on www.bookfinder.com for less than $25.00. If I were working on a model of a bomb ketch I’d snap that one up.

I would recommend the “Bomb Vessel GRANDO” by Peter Goodwin as an excellent source for a Britsh bomb ketch. This book is full of details for the construction of a bomb ketch model. It is out of print, but available at Amazon.com for $32.50.

The "DAPPER TOM kit is a good kit for a Baltimore privateer of that era, even though no such ship under that name ever existed. It is however, a good rendition of a generic fast vessel that was supposed to be the ancester of the Baltimore clipper.
Happy modeling Crackers [8-|]

I picked up a yellow box kit of the Harriet Lane from an estate sale. Unstarted, but the fittings are in a compartmented plastic box-- various compartments with grey lumps and grey powder! In order to build it, I’d need all new fittings.

I was thinking I’d use some of the kit materials to enhance the Lindberg (ex Pyro) plastic model. (I understand the Pyro kit is basically a plastic copy of the original wood kit…)

" G " ;

I will have to pipe in here .

I have done many wood ships kits over the years . I always build All bulwarks out of separate material .That way I don’t have the worry of the things splitting out as they are thinned .

Well;

It’s been awhile " G " . The KIDD stabilized after doing the regular Bulkheads . I normally would have done frames , but I was trying to hold to the client’s wishes . T.B.
