Hi everyone I am new to the forum I’ve just finished my first model ship Occre Palamos really enjoyed it as I love woodworking but due to health I can get in my workshop at the moment so loving the modelling world . My question is I’ve been using the tamiya saw with a small mitre box was just wondering if there was fine better saw I normally use Japanese saws full size but wanted something small like the tamiya thankyou in advance for reading my question
@Steves-Gaming-Uk Welcome to the community. Glad you finally made it.
I don’t have any words of wisdom on the mitre as I don’t use one. Hopefully one of the many others on here can help.
Hey Steve,
I assume you’re using the Tamiya craft saw with the black handle and these blades (pointing at them in the photo). Yes, there are definitely finer saws. For miter cuts, I prefer the old-fashioned pull saws you see in the center. Super fine teeth and available from FSM, Model Expo, Micro-Mark, and plenty of other places. You can also use razor saws (bottom), although less useful for miters. And then there are specialty photo-etched metal saws that come in a variety of odd shapes to help create special cuts or get into hard to reach areas (left).
Add saws as budget allows. My sequence was modelers saw (Zona
Add saws as budget allows. My sequence was modelers saw (Zona), coping saw, jig saw, table saw, and finally a band saw. I find uses for all, but I’ve been ship modeling for 74 years= enough to gather a pretty good colection of tools.

Thanks for your help guys think I will go with a pull saw for a better cut in the mitre box thanks again forum is brilliant .
I like the X-Acto saws, like the ones in the center of @Tim_Kidwell1’s photo. They’re sharp and the teeth seem to last much longer than the Zona saw (stay away from that brand) which has nearly lost its teeth because they are so soft they didn’t hold up to plastic or light wood - I’m talking about wood that will cut with a razor blade in my Dspaie Angle Cutting Station.
I’ve got a cheap one I got off mega hobby I believe, it’s been several years, I’ve literally never used it
Hobbyisthaven.com has some nice, and inexpensive, japenese backsaws with only a 0.10 kerf. Super thin. Worth a look.
