Hello,

I just sprayed Model Master light gray acrylic paint for the first time after using Tamiya paints forever and realize you do not have to thin this paint do you? At what pressure should I be spraying at, I sprayed at about 15psi and it was much to thin. Should you prime before spraying mm acrylics? If so what primer should I use for the MM acrlics?

I typically add a few drops of alcohol as a thinner. 15psi is good but no more than 18, otherwise it crystalizes before it hits the surface. Priming? Depends on the plastic it is being applied to. If the plastic has a waxy feel I would prime.

What namebrand of primer would you use? Would Tamiya surface primer fine be ok with the MM acrylics? When you waxy do you mean sort of a soft plastic? It is a very crappy ship model from Lindberg but I promised someone I would complete the kit for him.

I primarily use cheap flat white or light gray paint. Tamiya is okay. Straight from the bottle thinned a tad with rubbing alcohol.

I use MM Acrylic Thinner-and add according to the viscosity of the paint. I always add a few drops as I would hope that the thinner has a retardant in it. I have tried mixing some alcohol w/retardant and using that, but haven’t gotten the mixture correct…yet.

As far as primer, if it is an interior part with no masking, no primer. Exposed surface for aircraft, I use Tamiya spray can primer…keeps the paint from lifting up. For an armor project where surface texture isn’t as critical, I use Krylon primer.
