Im getting ready to build the hasegawa 1/72 f-14A atlantic fleet squadrons in “Jolly Roger” markings, I need to pickup the paint necessary for the build and with a newborn in the house I dont have too much open time to run to the LHS. Tomorrow I have said time, right after work but there is one problem with this plan…I dont have the kit yet, it is supposed to come tomorrow but seeing how it will come while I am at work and I am going from work to the LHS this does not help one bit. So, long story short I would be eternally greatful if someone who knows these aircraft and markings could breakdown the basic colors necessary for the build. Preferably in model masters. Thanks ahead of time
The instructions indicate:
The aircraft is overall Light Gull Gray, (FS 16440, MM #1729)
The radome is Radome Tan (MM #1709)
Tails and anti-glare panel are black (Tail tips are yellow FS 13538)
The wing seal area is Dark Sea Gray
That pretty much covers the basic colour scheme.
And that is they hi vis scheme correct? Thank you
It is the VF-84 hi-viz scheme. The lo-viz scheme is almost identical except that the tails are Light Gull Gray instead of black (Tips still yellow)
If I recall correctly, the aircraft featured in the movie didn’t have tan radomes. Have a look at this page http://www.almansur.com/jollyrogers/jollytomcats.htm and scroll down to the 5th and 6th pics. #5 is “207” with a grey over white colour scheme and #6 is #213 with an all-over grey scheme. From memory there were scenes in the movie showing aircraft in both schemes. (Sorry if this causes more confusion)
Remember that’s what they looked like at the start of the cruise! After no time at all, corrosion control, booboo’s, and normal wear and tear reduced the finish to something out of your worst nightmare. Anything goes to keep 'em flying including tape, 100mph type on cracked radomes, to parts swapping. ONLY the CAG bird was off limits! maybe…
Depending on maintainence schedules there may be several different color schemes in a single squadron. Ditto drop tanks.
Have fun 'cause your imagination is the limit after the basic colors are put down.
Thanks guys, the info should help immensly
Don’t forget some Dark Gull Gray for the inside of the cockpit. Also some olive green for the seat cushions and red, yellow and silver for various details.

Looking at those pics in the links, a good way to tell the diff on hi viz schemes is the size of the fuselage national insignia. If it is a large( 36" or 48"), the F-14 is Gull Gray over White, the smaller size (15") is used on the overall Gull Gray aircraft. also none of the Gray/White F-14s appeared to have the Tan on the radome.
