So I back to building a kit after on the sidelines awhile. I have some older MM enamels I need to hand brush and trying to get a smooth coat as possible. What’s best to thin it a little and get the smooth finish? I have 'ole lacquer thinner, MM Universal enamel thinner or Mr Color Leveling thinner 400???

Ahoy Mrchntmarine. All three of your selections would work, however, because you are brushing, I would choose MM Universal first because it is the least “hot” of your choices. For brushing, I’d stay away from the other two.

Whenever I have to brush small things, I’ll just use my MM straight out of the bottle. For other things, on the larger side, I’ll add a drop of Mr. Color Leveling thinner to my mix. Use the appropriate size brush and try not to “over brush” the part.

Agreeing with USAF_462’s suggestions to not ‘over paint’. Enamels can be more forgiving in this department, but the more brush strokes you put on the subject, the more will show up. I also try to put things down a bit wet, so there’s paint to spread and level on its own. It’s something you have to test with each type of paint. I’ve had good luck with Alclad and MM metallics this way. And with Alclad, I actually just drop it on to the subject and let it spread on its own. If you take a brush back to it, it’ll usually pull up the paint.
