Mil Mi-24D Hind 1/48TH

Been out of the loop for awhile, and just missed getting into the Mi Hind group build. I am going to proceed with this project on my own. Seeing what is in the build has motivated me into pulling down this kit from the stack. This is Monograms kit in the black box. Found this at a garage sale for $1.00 USD. The previous owner had already started it.

So for a dollar what the heck. Upon opening the box, obviously the builder was going through the motions of building a helicopter model. Didn’t matter if the paint used was accurate or not. The cockpit was painted overall gloss grey, a dark grey for the crew area. Gobs of tube glue was used to attach some bits and pieces to the RH fuselage 1/2.

So using a little nail polish remover to loosen the bonds was used to separate the kit parts. The rotor blades were painted chrome silver, most likely from Testors bottle. The rotor head as well.

Going over the kit showed that all the parts were there. At least no missing pieces. As part of my Desert Storm project for the 91 Gulf War. I will build this as an Iraqi machine. More to follow.

Eghads,! why would anyone pursue a project like this, though not an expensive kit, and not hard to get. Well it was there for a buck so what the heck.

As I was lucky to find that all the parts were accounted for. I decided I will also use Cobra’s cockpit set. I 've never used any of there material before so I figure this is the time to do so. (Since I’m planning on getting there HH-60H conversion set but very expensive).

So I do have my work cut out for me on this little endeavour. Upon checking out Cobra’s detail set, cast in a light grey resin. The details are very crisp and nicely done. This definately will enhance the base kit. The set is designed to
replace the kit parts, the set also contains a set of replacement wheels.

The Cobra set is really a big improvement over the parts that are supplied by Monogram. You can see the difference just in the seats. You will need to use the cyclic and control strick from the kit. Since this helo operated in a desert environment, I will need to purchase the exterior detail set from cobra for the intake filters and other detail bits.

Will be using a combination of Aeromaster and Xtracolour paints for the Iraqi camo scheme. And now back to the bench.

looking at those plastic spurs, it brings back memory’s of when I built mine!

Interesting project you have there!

Why don’t you have a look at our Hind GB, maybe you can still join up, if you want.
If I remember well, we havent set an end date for the build; all we did is set a cut off date (beginning of July) for people to join.

I did check out the Hind group build. Seems the cutoff date was set at June 1st to enter. Though I do not know if this is set in stone? But I do not believe I can get it completed by early July anyhow.
