Saw a great special on history channel last night. My next two builds are going to be a Mig and a US Sabre, I guess F86. Anybody recommend 1:48 for these? Are they both silver? I saw what appeared t be red Migs, does that make sense?

Man, i wish we had the history channel over here! Fancy that, one of my next kits is an Academy 1/48 F-86F Saber “Mig Killer”! I opened the box of the 1/72 Saber, and it was tiny (i’m used to building multi-engined stuff in 1/72)! I think 1/48 is the way to go for a saber. Both paint schemes come in silver and are essentially the same, seeing how the two planes come from the same squadron or something.
Seeing as i haven’t built it yet, i can’t vouch for the fit of the parts and ease of construction, etc… but the detail looks very good (i may not need resin aftermarket kits as this will suffice… that and i can’t find any resin aftermarket kits for this saber [:p]).
The options are also very nice. The kit comes with the option to saw the fuselage in half to show off the “detailed” engine, two pilots (sitting and standing), open/closed airbrakes and hatches, a myriad of weapon stores and the option to close off the intake if you’re not in the mood to detail the engine bay. It looks like loads of fun, but i’ll get back to you when i’ve finished with it (but don’t hold your breath because i’ve got a PBY on the workbench [;)])
A lot of the migs over North Korea had colorful paint schemes. Both aircraft look simular and in a dog fight it was very hard to distinguish friend from foe, hence the yellow ID bands on the Sabers. Hasegawa and Acadamy make a good Saber, just depends how much you want to pay. Check here for some reviews of the different kits:

The best 1/48 MiG-15 must be the Tamiya offering although I read in a book (somewhere at home) that there are a few things needing improvement. I can give you the info if you want it.
There were some MiG-15 painted partly in red, those of the Soviet aerobatic team, although the bottom of the aircraft was blue.
Is this the MiG-15 with the clear outter skin? that sounds like an interesting model (as if handling clear parts wasn’t hard enough already!)… [:)]
I saw the show-good as usual. BTW some Chinese “volunteers” had red noses (on their jets) but that’s all I’ve heard of.
Shrikes, Tamiya makes a clear version of the MiG-15 (kit #61080) which sells for 2,500 yen (about $23 USD) and a regular version (non-clear, kit # 61043) which sells for 2,000 yen (about $18 USD) here in Japan.
They sure do look good!
I’ve only built the old Monogram 1/48 F-86 and MiG-15, and aside from raised panel lines, I thought they were great kits.
Granted, I built them over 20 years ago, and can’t really recall how accurate they were…but I sure liked 'em at the time!
The Clear MIG is sitting in my “whats next?” pile.
It does show numerous paint schemes, including the red one on the Hist channel show, which was good one.
One of them didn’t look too red, it almost looked blue. And the variation is the shaeds of silver/aluminum was amazing.
I’d go with Tamiya’s MiG-15 and Hasegawa’s F-86. Although the Academy F-86 is a nice kit as well.
My fave scheme for Korean War MiG-15’s is the first bird on this Aeromaster sheet. I’ve always been intrigued by the Ruskie-piloted MiG-15’s during that conflict.
