MiG-29 UB/GT details...

MiG-29 UB/GT

Revell Kit# 80-4751

1:32 scale

History:

The MiG-29 UB/GT is derived from the Russian MiG-29 (NATO codename – Fulcrum-A) by the addition of a second cockpit, for training future fighter pilots, under a large, elongated canopy.

Aside from the obvious change in profile, the MiG-29 UB/GT (NATO codename – Fulcrum B) has no radar installed, whereas the Fulcrum A, does. The Fulcrum A has the Slotback radar system (N019), which is, essentially, an upgraded Spin Scan MiG-21 radar. Both aircraft retain the IRST (infra-red search and track) systems, as well as Odd Rod systems; both aircraft retain the 30mm GSh-30-1 cannon with 150 rounds.

Kit parts not required are:

As per Revell-Germany’s instruction sheet, parts #3 and 4 are not used in the making of this kit. In actuality, there are more parts.

Parts # 86, 87, 88, 89, 90 (x4) – R-27R1 air-to-air missile – Alamo A. This missile is SARH and therefore requires radar to provide mid-course guidance. The Fulcrum B does not have this radar installed; therefore, the missiles should not be loaded. Parts #91 and 92 are the launching pylons for the Alamo-A missile. You could leave them off as well.

Painting:

Revell-Germany’s painting guide is so hard to follow, so I thought I would give fellow modelers a break and do the research for them.

Color A (Anthracite Gray, matt) is (FS 595b - #37031)

Color B (Light Gray, semi-gloss) is (FS 595b - # 26300)

Color C (Mouse Gray, matt) is (FS 595b - #26132)

Color D has no equivalent RAL color

Color E (Aluminum) is (FS 595b - #36628)

Color F (Black, semi-gloss) is (FS 595b - # 27038)

Color G (Leaf Green, semi-gloss) is (FS 595b - #24109)

Color H (Fiery Red, semi-gloss) is (FS 595b - #21440)

Color I (Gray, semi-gloss) is (FS 595b - #27376)

Color J (Light Gray, semi-gloss and Gray, semi-gloss) is possibly (FS 595b - #26300)

Color K is (FS 595b - #27376)

Color L (Silver) is (FS 595b – 17178)

Color M (Yellow, matt) is RAL 1016 or 1026 (FS 595b - #33538 or #33591)

Color N (White, semi-gloss) is RAL 9003 (FS 595b - #27875)

Color O (Copper) has no equivalent RAL or Federal Standards 595b color

Color Q (Light Gray, matt and White, matt) are (FS 595b - #36300 and #37875)

Color R (Grayish-Blue, matt, White, matt and Blue, matt) are (FS 595b - #25237, 37875, 35056)

Color S (Gray, matt and White, matt) (FS 595b - # 35463 and 37875)

Color U (Dark Gray, semi-gloss) is (FS 595b - # 36173)

Color V (Beige, semi-gloss) is (FS 595b - #20450)

I backtracked the Federal Standards 595b chart to the current RAL chart and matched the colors from there. These are approximately the right color; however, based on actual lighting conditions when displayed, the colors can appear different, even though they are not.

I hope that this helps my fellow modelers and although the list is only for the MiG-29 UB/GT, it should serve for most military applications (modern).

wychdoctor92394 do you have this model? If so I have nearly finished mine, on the Big Russian Jet GB, also the colours on the box are incorrect, the actual aircraft has a greyish blue camouflage finish so the colours stated are slightly inaccurate, however if you have this model, and want to join the GB do, I want as many Russian aircraft models to join, I am the only person doing a 1/32 MIG29 UB so it would be good to see someone else do it,

Yes, Dean. I have this model; although I haven’t started building it yet, as I do research long before I start. As for the color choices on the box, well, yes, they are incorrect but as most modelers are either serious builders like you and I, or the average (which is what Revell markets to) modeler, it gives us a choice. Actually, the colors are completely incorrect for the Russian version. Where the aircraft is stationed-in eastern Russia-, the color scheme is different. There’s not a lot of information on exactly how they are painted, but I’m not done researching yet. It’s the grayish-green color that’s giving me fits…

What group is this? Big Russian Jet GB? Send me the link in my email

I don’t know how accurate the colors are, but ModelMaster has the Fulcrum Grey and Fulcrum Grey/Green in enamels… looks like they need to be lightened up a little before use.

Both of them are incorrect. The rule of thumb is to lighten them up by ten percent, but that’s just a guideline amount. The RGB codes above are taken directly from the Russian military color sites, and are as correct as they can be, given the limits of web colors available. They also might look different on your computer than on a decal paper sheet or on the aircraft itself. What I do, is make a color swatch using the paint program, and check the paint bottle color against it. If it’s close enough, I tend to use it.

I have two programs I’m working on; a color swatch program to go with my Federal Standards 595b list, and a program with 1,092 colors I’ve managed to sample over the years. I will be making the second swatch program for the 1,092 colors but as you can see, it’s going to take a while to do. The second program has 96 different shades of gray in it, alone…

Email me and I’ll send you the Excel program with the FS colors in it… the RGB codes are what you enter into your paint program. Click on the little bucket of paint in the sidebar and look for the word colors in the bar above the white screen. Enter the RGB codes and you’ll get the color. Check that against the bottled color you have and lighten or darken it as needed.

By the way, ModelMaster Fulcrum Gray Green is RGB code 177, 197, 195 and the Gray is 203, 199, 188

This is the actual aircraft Revell used for their Re-release of the MIG 29UB, the coulurs appear slightly different in various lights, from some angles it looks like a two tone grey and from others a grey/blue camouflage, one thing is for sure, if you want to do a heavily weathered mig 29 this is the one to do it with. The kit is pretty good, but quite basic, so it depends what you want from a kit but I like it. Here is the link to the website, check it out and see what you think, personally I mixed the colours myself, I never seem to find anything close to what I am after colour wise, plus mixing them saves you money rather than buying new ones every time.

The link does not seem to work, here is a picture instead.

Apparently, Russian weed-whacker technology lags behind the West (or Texas anyway!).

wychdoctor92394 Here is the link for the Big Russian Jet Groupie GB, it’s on the aircraft subjects not the GB page.

OK, I tried the link, but my computer apparently doesn’t recognize it. Any information, send to my email addy (posted above)…

Or you could just look a little on the main “Aircraft” page to see the BIG Russian Jet Groupie GB thread… it’s right on the front page.

Lol, that would be what to do!
