MIG 29 Fulcrum Colors

Hi. Does anyone have any difinitive info on the correct colors for the older Monogram MIG29 Fulcrum kit? I pickd up the two colors I saw on eBay for it (Fulcrum Grey MM 2133 and Fulcrum Gray/Green MM 2134). The Landing gear in most of the images I have found look to be a different shade of darker green. And I can’t quite pin down the correct colors in the cockpit. I’m going to do a couple of easy practice kits to get some practice airbrushing, and my MIG 29 is one of them. The other being a halfway completed MIG 15 I found in my closet.

Thanks

Rich

I built that kit last year as my entry back into modeling. It builds quite nicely, just watch out for the seam on the intake trunk. Mine required a bit of sanding due to a step between the two pieces.

I cant say what the most accurate colors are, I just used what I had in my stash and airbrushed a fictional splinter scheme. Here is the finished model:

I do hope you post a WIP. It would be nice to see another modeler tackle the same kit! [:)]

I’ll see I can pry the camera away from the Mrs. and get a few shots when I get to that point. I just mounted the completed cockpit assembly into the top fuselage section. What did you do with the air intake doors? I,m considering modifying them to be a bit more open, but I’m not sure if I should do it yet. And what did you use (color) for the panel line pre-shading? It looks really cool. I like the woodland theme of the camo.

I built the intake doors as-is. No adjustments…however the intake doors are the wrong shape. If I am remembering correctly, the intake itself is rectangular but the doors actually widen out towards the top. That took some trimming and a bit of putty. Seen here:

I primed the kit in black spray can and filled in the panels from there.

and thank you for the compliment on the splinter scheme. It was like magic when I peeled off the masking!! Its still my most favorite paint scheme I have done yet.

I see what you mean. I’m thinking of modifying them to be open as they would be in flight. I;ll have to determine if it’s worth the hassle. Yeh that pattern is great. I’ll probably be freehand airbrushing to get a slightly soft line on the gray scheme,

I built this same kit a few years ago and used the same Model Master paints you mentioned. lt came out quite nice. For the cockpit, I used Dark Gull Gray and I kept the wheel wells the same color as the underside. According to Yefim Gordon’s great book on the Mig-29, the wheel wells do appear to be about the same shade as the rest of the underside.

The model sat on my shelf for some time, but the incorrect pylons and the incorrect fuel tank drove me nuts. So, I attempted the Academy kit as a replacement and that drove me even more nuts! The Monogram kit was a much easier build. The Monogram kit is also a bit larger than 1/48 scale, but that didn’t bother me.

I really like this plane. If I had the shelf space, I would build several of them.

Yeh it’s a beautiful bird. I think it’s cooler looking than an F22. I’m going to guestimate the color of the landing gear based on some images I have found. I am going to try and get some AM pylons for it though.

You may find something of use here and here.

Thanks for that link. It was very helpful. I wonder if anyone makes some AM decals for the Russian Swifts…?

I’m partial to the Slovakian bird in Digicam.
