I just started building the TRUMPETER MIG-15 and I have a question about the cockpit color…
In the instructions they say to paint the cockpit walls in “Blue Pearl”, what color is appropriate to use from “MM or Hu”.
The second question is, from the pictures I found on the net the cockpit is in light grey…
What is the right to use [?]
I would go with whatever you find online. Pictures are usually right… But that’s just me. There are several shades of light grey in all brands of paints. www.hobbylinc.com is a good website to search for all of them. Just use what seems right. Hope this helps.
Mig-15 and other earlier soviet fighters had grey cockpits. The turquoise blue came later.
DJ is correct. I think late Mig-19s were the first Migs to use that vomit-producing blue-green. Before that the color was close to MM Aircraft grey. As mentioned, look at photos. While MM Aircraft grey is close, it seems to me it may need a small amount of blue to better match.
[tup] THX guys …BTW nice Migs Bones-coa
You’re right… for cockpit interior is Aircraft Gray… that’s a gloss paint (at least in Model Master)… but what about landing gear , landing gear wells and wheel hubs?..
As i understand it should be the same for the shock struts, wheel wells and hubs…
Am i wrong? [%-)]
I’m not sure about the other stuff. I found on Mig-19s and 21 that, in most cases, it wasn’t painted at all. If the aircraft was painted, many times they just painted the wheel wells and doors the same color. As for the 15 and 17, I don’t really knwo for sure. I wan’t to say they’d be unpainted too…but don’t quote me on that.
As for the wheel hubs, Migs have a particular color green they use on all aircraft. i had orginally thought that started with the 19 but found a pic of a 15 in a museam with the hubs painted green. I don’t know for sure though if that is accurate. Again, look around on the net for that stuff.
Thanks Lionking![tup]
ever wonder why the soviets decided to go with that “vomit producing blue green”?
Hey, so did Douglas in the DC-9 for years!

To protect the aluminum from rust … or you mean the tone of the paint ?
I’ve seen MiG-15s and 17s just off the boat from China, with their rather worn original cockpit paint, and these birds were all black in the office. But then, you did say Soviet, didn’t you. Still, I believe the statement that the pukey turquoise color the Soviets used didn’t start until the 15 was obsolete. I saw Soviet-built Mig-21’s off the boat from Hungary (again, before restoration), and they had that color EVERYWHERE but the bare outer skin, but I have never seen the green-blue on earlier MiGs. The color was available from Xtracolor in enamel last time I used it. Been a while.

That green blue color is rteally weird. Maybe they thought it cheered their pilots up… Who knows?
I don’t know what the reson is. i asked that question concering the hubs. Actually, ALL Soviet-built aircraft use that dark green on the hubs. The company that makes the hubs is or was building mostly armour vehicals. Well, they just used that green for the hubs. In otherwords, there really wasn’t a set reason. The hubs were just painted that color and it didn’t matter.
Maybe they ran out of grey for the cockpits and someone found that color laying around so they started using it. Or, since it was such an ugly color, it was cheap. I don’t know if these are true, but I wouldn’t be surprised.
