Micro Mask Painting Issues

Hi, everyone.

I’m having some trouble with Micro Mask. I tried it for the first time using it for masking areas other than canopies. I tried masking off the camoflauge on Airfix’s Martlet. I had already painted the underside with Tamiya sky, and masked that off as well as the area that was to be the stone grey color, in order to paint the green camo.

I airbrushed the green using ammo of Mig acrylics. I waited 24 hours then commenced with peeling the Micro Mask off. This is where the trouble started. As I peeled the masking off, the green started to lift up at its edges. In some places it wasn’t bad at all, and in others, it looks terrible. Some of the vallejo primer even lifted up with the masking. The Tamiya shy, however, was perfectly fine.

I don’t know what I did wrong. Should I have waited longer for the paint to dry? Or maybe Ammo of Mig paints don’t adhere well?

Maybe there’s a better way to mask cammo?

Help!

Well for one vallejo primer isn’t all that great at biting into the plastic. Was the model prepared good first? No skin oil or mold release on it? Next time I would start with Tamiya primer or if you want to use your ab the stuff badger makes is good

If I recall, there is a warning on the Micro Mask bottle not to use it with water based paints. If it’s not on the bottle, I have read it elsewhere.

Just adding to what Clint and hyper said, which I agree with, IMO MicroMask isn’t really designed for rather large masking jobs like camo. It is more for little places where it’s hard to get masking tape, for example the middle portion of a masked canopy not covered by tape.

I think you are asking for trouble using it over large areas.

To mask camo, most folk either use rolled up blu-tac or playdoh, cut thier own paper masks, buy masks or frisket, or freehand them. Honestly, I’ve never seen anyone use MicroMask (maybe you’re on to something! )

Hope you get this sorted out.

Don’t try this with Humbrol Maskol or Mr Masking Sol Neo over acrylic based paints either, or you’ll risk having a very bad day.

I was just outlining the camo with the Micro Mask and then covering the rest with tape, but the micromask would peel up the edge of the paint. Hypertex, you’re right, the bottle says it isn’t suggested to use with water based paint. I guess I should’ve read the bottle first : D I think I’ll try blu-tack, and see how that works. Thanks for all your suggestions everyone!
