Michael Wittman's Rank at death

My son has just asked me a question about Wittmann’s rank at his death. One book says SS-Untersturmfuhrer, another says SS-Obersturmfuhrer, I think it was SS-Hauptsturmfuhrer. Would somebody please help me and my future model builder with this question.

Thanks

His rank was SS-Obersturmfuhrer when awarded the Oak leaves with Swords to his Knight’s Cross in June 13, '44. Killed August 8, '44 in borrowed Tiger #007.
I believe by Typhoon rocket, others believe by Firefly. Either way, same result.

hehehe You beat me to it ausf !!! [;)]

Did he borrow 007 from Unterscharfuhrer von Bond? [:p]

Just kidding. It’s interesting that so many decal sets give you 007 for Wittmann when he fought what is arguably the most famous tank engagement of the war, at Villers Bocage, in 205. I guess you could always say that it’s Westernhagen’s tank, otherwise it’s just Wittmann’s hearse.

Only if Blofeld was in the Typhoon/Firefly. Is that a SPECTRE on your shoulder?

August 8 1944 was a good day to call in sick.

Hi Guys,

What version of the Tiger was the 205…was it a “Middle” or “Late”?

Thanks!
JD

He received a new Late production on D-Day, #205. He apparently visited the production line in May '44, inspecting the Ausf Es being built.

Arrhhhh you beat me to it again ausf hehehehe [:D]

yeah ausf is right, he got it on D-Day and lost it on June 13th in Villers Bocage.

Diasbled by a 6-pounder and crew. Anybody know what ever happened to the tank?
