hey,
i just bought some methylated spirits coz the store clerk said there was no thing as mineral spirits, and i though i got the names mumbnled up in my head (it happens!!).
i just wanna know if i can use this to thin enamel (model master) paints
cheers!
Your store clerk needs to go walk around a hardware store. They are full of cans labeled “Mineral Spirits”. I’ll be glad to take a picture of the label on a can if he can’t find one.
Sorry, I don’t know if methylated spirits can be used to thin enamels or not.
Return the stuff as soon as you can, tominator! As the ff. link will tell you, methylated spirits is just another name for denatured alcohol:

Now somebody correct me if I’m wrong, but denatured alcohol is a thinner for varnish, not oil-based enamels. DA is a mixture of ethyl alcohol and methyl alcohol, which are both soluble/mixable in water but not in oil. So in effect, the DA will not mix with your enamels at all. It may work as a thinner for aqueous acrylics, but I’m not sure since I haven’t tried it yet. Hope this helps.
Cheers,
