Merlin engine color??

Ok, this is driving me nuts (already most of the way there-married with kids [8-]). I am working on a Mustang project, and have need to know if the merlin engines in the mustang were a dark green, or black?? I have seen pics of both colors and dont know which is correct.

Also need a side view of both sides showing the plumbing-anyone know of where I can find those at too??

thanks for the help

jim

Here’s a pic I took recently of a Rolls-Royce Merlin at the 8th Air Force Museum recently… I don’t know if it’s been restored accurately, but figured I’d post it anyway. Let me know if you’d like a larger version.

Go with the reference that is closest to the time frame you are depicting. Things change in prduction lines and paint colors of engines and such can vary depending on when and where it was built(Merlins were built by Rolls Royce and Packard under license). Aircraft Resource Center www.aircraftresourcecenter.com has some shots of a RR Merlin in their Walkarounds area.

This is a shot I got at the Pima Museum.

Jon:

Are you sure that is a Merlin? It looks like a Griffon to me because of the accessory housing on the front of the engine. I haven’t seen a Merlin variant that had that. I’m ready to be corrected, however, because it does have the magnetos in the back. Maybe it’s a transport type.

Hey all,

Thanks for the help, it is greatly apreciated.
