For those who were waiting for this, sorry for the delay. I had hoped to start in in Nov, but as usual things didn’t work out that way.
Finally made a start on the 88 yesterday. Looking at the kit, there is certainly room for some improvement. In the main, I need to make handles for the hand wheels, the kit ones are just small stub’s. I also need to add some bolts in a few places, not sure how yet, I don’t have a punch and die set, so going to have to try and make them by hand. The panoramic Telescope which sits in the recuperator is very poorly details. But this was covered when not in use, so I am going to try and make one of those.
The biggest issue is that the barrel has no rifling. So the two options are to try and rifle it or make a cover. I think option two is the most likely.
So far I have assembled the barrel and the cradle, I won’t be putting the two together until after painting.
This give an idea of how big this is, the barrel is over 10inches long.
That’s it for now. Going to try and add those missing details and start on the pedestal.
Eagle, I know. Think of all the 72nd kits I could do with this plastic. But hopefully it will be worth the sacrifice.
Tojo, I have been itching to get at this one. Its not often I start a kit so soon after getting it, but as soon as I saw it, I knew I couldn’t resit. It might not be upto the detail standard of a Dragon kit, but I think the size alone means it will be a site to see when done.
Glad to have you on board Johan. So far, not to bad. The bits which come up the side of the cradle and support the recuperate were ot a perfect fit, but nothing major. Certain things need attention, like filling holes and of course adding nuts and bolts. As I go along, I will get some close up of the areas that needed attention. I just wanted to get a quick post out there to kick it off.
All in all, its not a Dragon kit in regards to the detail. But the again, it is also cheaper than the much smaller 35th Dragon 88. I would say it is worth it.
Is there, I haven’t been for a couple of years, I don’t recall seeing it then, either I missed it or its a new addition. It would be nice to get down there and get some first hand pics, I just don’t have the time right now. But thanks for the heads up.
Hi Bish,
Only had 5 pictures from the IWM London and they where taken with a mobile back in 2007…
I was trying to get the different materials to show like the stainless steel firing angle meter, the wooden handles of the elevation wheels, the brass lining of the loading slid, the bare metal of the breach.
jibber, in that case, I will make extra effort to point out any problem areas.
Roy, beauty, those links are brilliant, thanks. Even if they are not the 36, the guns were that similar they are still useful. And I have a good idea of which bits do and don’t apply to the 36. Now I have seen it, I think the IWM one was there when I was, I just didn’t take any pics [bnghead] But those one are excellent. A nice pic of the hand wheels I need to sort out, and its at about the elevation I plan on doing mine, so I can see where the relevant handles and indicator should be.
Johan, brilliant, with those and the ones Roy just poste a link to, great detail on those handles, I didn’t know they were wood. can’t see that in B&W. I might leave the loading tray off, apparently some crews removed them.
If I don’t get this right now, you guys can kick my butt all the way across the Pond.
Not sure if that was/is a 20MM or not but this was next to the left of the 88.
Thought I had a couple but only one came up in the search.
The picture was taken for the same reason as above - interesting to see what the original “Gun-Metal” could look like.
I’ve seen armor kits in 1/15 and 1/16 scale, but this is the first kit in 1/18 scale that I’ve ever seen! Looking forward to seeing your work on this big gun Bish!
