Here are some progress pictures of my M-60A1. It’s a combination of the Italeri IDF Blazer, and Academy M-60A1 RISE/PASSIVE. The tan parts are Italeri, and the green ones are Academy. It started out just to be practice for the camo, but as you can see by the aluminum barrel it’s turned into much more. I’ll probably use the AFV Club tracks. I wanted to show it before the paint. I’m going to attempt the MERDC pattern roughly translated into “Snow over open terrain”. Painting should start in the next day or so. Thanks to HeavyArty and everybody who has patently answered my questions. I never realized how many changes were made though it service life. Any and all feedback good or bad are valued.
Looking good, there Matthew9. Keep us posted. The pattern is not as difficult to paint as you may think. Will there be reactive armor? Smoke grenade launchers?
Thanks. I’m not going to use the reactive armor or the smoke grenade launchers on this one.I’m trying to do a version I saw in the Hunnicutt Patton book at the library.
Modeler catastrophic failure. Since we like to show our work when we achieve our goals, I thought for a change I’d show lunching one badly. Above is the M-60A1 I’ve been working on. I was trying the MERDC pattern using Silly Putty which I’ve used successfully before. This time I put the 2nd color on too thick. This left large ridges between colors. Usually I just polish them out with a Q-tip. This did not work this time.So I tried to redo some of the spots after striping small spots with paint thinner, which I’ve done before(successfully). Have you ever pulled on a string on a pair of socks only to make it worse with every tug? [D)] Well I just made things worse with every dab. Then I spilled some paint thinner on the hull which melted some small parts, wasted the hull texture.[oops] So I started parting it out to use on the 105mm gun M-60. It will be painted OD.[:I] OK. I feel better now, enjoy.
Ouch, that looks like a painful mess. Looks like you’ll have a hell of a time cleaning it up. I feel your pain. I hate it when something like this happens.
matthew9, I wish I had seen this sooner, as I have been away. I don’t have daily internet access. Don’t trash it!! Send it to me!! I’ll pay for it!!
I have an M1 I got in 87-88 or so that has been through the ringer. It even has melted places on it from fishing lure worms melting to it during the heat of Texas in a non cooled storage shed.
About a month and a half ago I got two M1A1’s and with the old pieces I had and some spares from the new and some scratchbuilding, this old/new tank is actually starting to look pretty nice. If only I had a way to post pictures here at work. Some of the worm damage is now made to look like battle damage. My wife even says she likes this one better than the new ones because she saw this one before, and always hated it and wondered why I kept it. I always tell my friends to not throw away any models, give them to me. My M1 is testimony to why I say that.
Yes, the M1 was even painted entirely rust at one time, with a pellet hole shot through the side, as a “range target” style model. I painted it grey once to possibly scratchbuil some type of “fantasy/realistic” German WWII type self propelled howitzer… I mean it, this thing has been through the ringer, literally.
Please don’t trash it or range target it. I love 60’s.
Thanks for having the guts to show us a build gone bad. Whatever you do, I hope it works out good for you.
m60a3, if I’d known you wanted whats left sooner I would have gone a little easier on whats left.
There is very little left at this point, as I am using parts from, Tamiya, Ironside, Academy, AFV Club, Italeri, and Ertl parts make a 105mm gun M-60.
I’m real big on kit bashing. I have another M60a3, M-88, and a M-48 down the line, so the wheels, tracks and most of the small stuff are already gone from this one. Only a couple of butchered larger pieces left. I don’t think too much to salvage from this one. I’ll know better next time.
No problem, as long as you are kitbashing, I think it’s cool. I just hate to hear about someone trashing a kit, when it could have continued life in SOME way, shape or form.
Good luck, and keep posting pictures.
m60a3, I hate seeing things trashed also. There will be stuff left over from this, including the parts you saw above + a turret and who nows what else… After I’m done with this I’ll collect what’s left and let you know if your still interested.
Sure, just let me know! I have an old M48A3 or A5 that I lost the turret to years ago and I scratchbuilt a turret from some other styrene “pieces”. It has never looked right, almost like a field expedient guntruck, but on a tank chassis. If I could put a 60 turret, then it would definately help the old beast along.
I’m interested, just let me know. And thanks.
