The airedales here were discussing which fixed wing aircraft looked the meanest just sitting on the apron. I contend that the F-4 Phantom looked like it was evil incarnate. Any opinions on this?[?]
Hey Subfixer;
Well I agree that the F-4 looks mean on the ground but not to be biased I think the A-10 looks meaner, with the 30 MM gun sticking out the nose does make one humble and bow to it
A fully loaded Hawg looks pretty awsome in it’s own right…
i think i agree re the A-10, and for WWII aircraft i’d probably say a ground attack p-47 with all those rocket tubes ec, and maybe the henschel 129 with the 75mm cannon under the nose (yes, 75mm!![:0]).scroll down the page on the lis link for a look at that monster gun!!

Yup, the A10 wins my vote as a M.U.M.F.
My vote, F-4:
I reckon a Typhoon, what with 20mm cannons and rockets, or Hurricane ( I think a Mk 2D) with a 40mm tank buster cannon under each wing!!

Awesome picture of the A10
[yeah]
Yeah - so I’m biased…SO WHAT?! [:-,]
I would still have to go with the F-117A Nighthawk. For me it’s the black color, the ragged ‘sawtooth’ edges of the panel lines, the extreme sweep of the wings and outward cantered tailplanes, the angular overall shape (kinda reminds me of 1950’s-60’s muscle car design…blocky and powerful) and knowing what it’s capable of doing completely unseen and unheard until the bombs start exploding. Sure it doesn’t have a gun, but for its role - it doesn’t really have use for one.
My [2c] anyway…

(Guess this might be a poor time to say I think the F-4 looks like a droopy, sad, pathetic airframe huh? [}:)] )
uilleann, I see you’re from Salt Lake, I’m stationed up at Hill. If you ever what to see some aircraft up close let me know.
Dice REALLY?!?!
I used to have a friend who worked as an MP (is that correct for the AF?) And another who actually worked in the tower there. In fact, one fine day in my flight training, we flew up from Salt Lake and then back through Weber Canyon. We did a touch and go at Morgan (frightening to say the least - there’s almost no runway there!) and then it was back down to SLC. Well, on the way, my instructor decided he wanted to overfly the field at Hill. He popped on the radio and called up the tower. They were a little hesitant, but agreed to let us fly over the runway. The tower controller made it ABSOLUTELY clear that we were to maintain “wheels-off” at all times, and that use of deadly force was authorized if we were naughty! So here we come zipping along in our awesome little Cessna 172, dropped flaps and held about five feet off the runway. Then Dougy (my instructor) threw up the flaps, firewalled the throttle and we scooted off the remainder of the runway. In an F-16, I think this trip take about 20 seconds. For us, it felt more like five minutes! Anyway, we were still in ground effect by the time we got to the end of the runway, and doing probably 110 knots. Doug thought it would be funny to do a “Billie Blast-Off” and yanked back on the yoke pretty hard. I wasn’t expecting it and I think I said a few choice words just then. It felt like we shot off like a rocket, though I’m sure the guys in the tower must have wet themselves from laughter! Here’s some clowns in a Cessna thinking they’re a fighter jet!
singing …meeeeemories… [:D]
Bri~
P.S. I will most certainly take you up on that offer! Drop me an email and lets figure out a time we can make it happen. THANKS!
uilleann, not a problem I love showing people around their Air Force. Hehe I’m at work but will drop you an email when I get home or you can contact me at Hogpen13@aol.com and we can set something up.
Sorry didn’t meant ti high-jack this thread!! [^]
That’s a phine Phantom photo phor a phact, Erock!
Either the F-117 the F-22 Raptor.
For WWII planes I’d have to go with the P-61 Black Widow or any of the P-40s and other fighters with the sharkmouth nose art.
Modern day, I’m stuck between the a-10 and f-4 - tho leaning heavily towards the f-4.
Koreaish - F89
between wars - p67 bat (I know, just an x plane.
WW2 - somewhere between a p-40 and an f4-u corsair.
Definetly Hurricane/Tempest/Typhoon. Something about the way they sat made them look like they were snarling.
nobody mentioned the AD-1. Fully loaded, they were awesom
my vote is the a-10. looks like it could do land battle let alone air battle.

btw tombal, let me be the first to welcome you to the a/c forum and fsm.

F-4E the A-10 and the F-8. Rhino, MiG Master, and Hawg. Let’s do some damage!
Argh! I wish I could remember where I heard this but I recall hearing once a person saying that a blind man, relying only on the sense of touch, could run his hands over a Phantom and know in an instant that it was one lethal fighter! Has anyone else heard this one before? For modern jets I’d have to go with the F-4 Phantom. For Cold War era fighters I’d have to go with the F-89 Scorpion. For WW2 I’d have to go with the P-61 Black Widow.
