ME262 - Want to build

Would like to build a ME262.

Did a search here and most all posts are older.

I am not sure what, if any, good kits for this subject. Am flexible as to scale but m leaning toward 1/48.

Thanks!

Tamiya makes two nice versions in 1/48

I completed the HobbyBoss kit a couple of years ago. It was a good basic kit. Not sure what level of detail you are looking for.

The Trimaster is another good older kit that you can get for a good price. I have it in my stash and will get around to building it at some point.

I still prefer the old Monogram kit, myself. The Tamiya kit is nice, too.

Best regards,

Agree, Monogram is still a cool / good kit!

Since OP said “leaning” toward 1/48, there may be room for 1/72. That said, I heard recently that a new 72 scale 262 is on the way. I can’t remember the manufacturer though.. I want to say Arma Hobby or Fine Molds. Anyone heard of this?

Edit: Yes, it was Arma Hobby for the new 262 in 72

I have just completed a 1/72 Tamiya Zeke and totally struggled with painting the canopy but really enjoyed building the kit. Guess it may have been a bit small for my old man abilities.

My comfort zone is 1/48, but I’m willing to give another 1/72 a go.

I will look into the 1/72 offerings and most likely will pick one out otherwise I’ll go 1/48 Tamiya.

Arma kits have gotten very good reviews. Looks like the new 262 kit will be available in the next few weeks.

I am going to wait for it to come out.

Thanks everyone for the help and suggestions.

The Trimaster/DML Me-262 kits are fiddly and not beginner-friendly. I built one and it was quite challenging. Mine had stainless steel PE which was very difficult to cut and form. The separate engine to wing fairings are poorly shaped. The kit appeared accurate, but it was not fun to build.

I have heard the Hobby Boss kits are much easier to build and look good. Can’t go wrong with Tamiya in terms of ease of build.

I have several 1/72 Tamiya A6M’s in my stash. Amazing looking little kits, but as you have noted, the catch 22 in that scale is masking the greenhouse.

I expect masking a 1/72 262 canopy will be a breeze compared to a zero
I don’t understand why Tamiya only provides the masks in the 1/48 zero. I wonder If I scanned and reduced the 48 scale pattern to 72 if it would match up with their 1/72 kit? If not there is always the aftermarket precut masks, of which I would have no problem using to save my sanity while painting a 1/72 Zero canopy …

Canopies can be an issue

But over the years I worked out what best works for me:
1). A small Glass window pane and a metal straight edge.
2). Apply a length of masking tape to the glass and smooth it out.
3). With a new #11 x-acto blade and straight edge, cut both sides of the tape off and toss it. Now you have non fuzzy clean edges to work with.
4). Using the straight edge and new blade, cut the tape to whatever width you need. As small as 1/32" works well.
5). Pick edge of tape with the knife and use good tweezers to pull and place the tape on the canopy inner edge of frames, trim with the blade for length. Any scrap pieces place on the canopy in different places.
6). Use any of the liquid latex and fill in the exposed canopy where you do NOT want painted.

The thin strips of tape gives a nice hard edge and is flexable to conform to compound curves and irregular shapes and the latex fills in the rest easily, and for me, helps me get in touch with my inner lazy.

NEVER TOUCH THE GLUE SIDE OF THE TAPE WITH BARE FINGERS.
I always wear the blue gloves to mask canopies…and ignore any inferences of proctology from friends.

Well as indicated in another post, its been a while since ive been on. Oddly enough, I quickly built one in what little spare time i had…

Paints were Vallejo with some Tamiya X series.

This is the Tamiya kit with complete sets of interior and exterior PE from EDUARD.

I love the plane so much i bought another one…

That’s a great kit and it’s fun to build! Good work!

Quick question: the canopy looks frosted. Is that just lighting?

Ok…I need to buy that kit now, that looks great !
I’m not addicted…I…I can stop any time I want to…I …I…just don’t want to

Eons ago around 1976-77, I built a 1/72 ME-262 that had a 57mm long barreled cannon in the nose.
I think the doner kit was the airfix 262 and I grafted 57mm cannon from a Henshel kit and I had to create the nose gear because it rotated 90° as it retracted.
The airforce recruiter has it now hopefully still in that office.
I think it was produced in 1/48 a few years (20+) maybe by tri-master or dragon ?.

I was wrong…the cannon is a high velocity 30mm gun…and I bought one in 1/48
