Hey Gary glad to see you! I was wondering where you had gotten off to buddy. That is one cool project idea. I think I have a couple of pics of the Wulfschmitt somewhere. I can’t wait to see how she comes out. I hope you do’nt mind but I might try copying you and build one myself. Of course I would have to finish the four kits I have started first. Take lots of pics I would love to see just how it goes. Glad to have you back!
Well i thought i was pretty up with the 109/ 190 varients but this one has got me. What an excellent project. Please keep the pics posted. I await with Baited breath.
That’s quite the conversion. Good job soursing out the kits needed and the vision to see it through. It’s a very interesting subject and looks superb for what you have completed. Good work[tup]
PSR continues. Loads done but nothing really noticable but
Wing root sanded to a more sharper edge and faired into fuselage./
Gave up on existing wingtips, removed and 60thou replacements added. Hopefully this will stop the extreme tips from snapping off every five minutes.
At last somethig added and the flaps are on, cut from the 190 wing, filled sanded and cut to size with the ailerons.
Will probably have to fix the ailerons temporarily to get right shape on wingtips.
Engine bulges are setting as I type and will be added by next post to give a better impression of a BMW 801.;
While Im in the cowl area, some dents and bumps have appeared around where I stretched the original kit and are probably the result of glue fumes from the joins. As it is only 10thou card here, (you can see through the card to underneath) this thickness is easily distorted and I will have to fill and sand. I did play around with some foil from a wine bottle and the idea of a natural metal cowl is appealing, as the only deffinate colour ref I can find for this plane is RLM02 overall let alone national marking etc. Any one got some info on the finish I dont know about?
More as it happens,
Thanks for the info. Unfortunately these photos are for the V.21 which was an earlier realtime conversion with a BMW 139 engine.
The variant that I am building is of the 109X with a BMW 801 engine, to which I have no photographic evidence, just mentions in various books and plans of varying degrees of accuracy.
As to why I am scratchbuilding/converting
The kit you quote is again of the v21 but LF do produce a kit of the 109X in 1:48 which is available from Hannants in the UK for £54.60 (or $106+)
The two kits (Arii 109 & 190 1:48) cost around £5:00 ($9+) including P+P on Ebah.
From various reviews the build of LF kits is a bit hit and miss and at the price my miserly streak kicked in (altho I will prob make up the difference in card and filler[:D]).
Regarding complex chop jobs,
I have a masochistic streak in me that lets me even enjoy PSR,
I`d rather have a mishape in plastic than a block of balsa,
Very nice build and progress. But a very odd thing for the Germans to do.
I mean they already had the FW-190. Just build lots of those and stop fiddling with the 109 airframe. It was pretty small and had reached developmental limits pretty quick.
But hey, then we wouldnt have this cool modeling topics.
Well back to the build, I now have ailerons and by tommorrow I may have the slats (depends on the curry we`re going out for tonight!) . Replaceing the wingtips has worked and their now on the way to completion.
While waiting for the filler to dry I had a look at the undercart legs
Now if theres two parts of any build that I dislike its canopies and undercarts. With a canopy one slip with the saw/knife and your left with a big contribution to the spares box, unless theres a vac replacement which holds for me its own terrors.(I normaly buy them in 3s just in case for an open cockpit, 1 for the middle, 1 for the ends and 1 for the inevitable cockup). Undercarts I just hate removing mould lines etc, and this was no exception. If I ever get driven to 1:32 or bigger it will be because of undercart legs that I can see and actually hold at the same time-the trouble with big hands. Anyways after an hour or two results reasonable.
Sanding, sanding, sanding. Today I actually ran out of 1000 & 1200 grade! so have decided to give it a squirt of RLM02 o/all, just to see.
On the whole quite pleased. Where I thought there might be probs (on the underside join of the 190/109 wings and on top at the root)has sanded out fine. The cowling may need reworking as it still shows a few dents and dings from the drying glue and filler underneath but I will see. The fuselage join and trailing edge at the root needs work as do the slats but as I said, on the whole quite pleased.
