Hey guys, I need help. I’m working on a figure, and it ended up being gloss. I need something to make it be “flat” - matte. I don’t know what I need, I’m guessing matte varnish or something. What would you recommend? Thanks.
I like Alclad Klear Kote Flat, really drys dead flat, just mist it on
If you are looking for a good paint on matt then AK Ultra Matte is excellent- it will also airbrush well too.
Okay then, thanks Anthony and Karl. I’ll look into them.
Testors Lacquer Dull Cote works pretty good for me.
Just ordered Alclad Klear Kote Flat, as it was the best deal. Thanks for your help all.
Wouldn’t the choice of a clear topcoat (matte or gloss) depend on the type of paint already used? As I understand it, lacquer can’t go over acrylic paint for example.
Can’t say what everyone’s experience has been, but I spray Alclad Lacquer Flat on acrylics all thd time without problems,I mist it on in light coats, not flooding it.
I’ve had zero problems airbrushing on lacquers over acrylics… as long as the acrylics have had plenty of time to dry and cure.
Might not be the most popular choice, but I have had success with using Vallejo’s Satin and matt varnish. For Gloss I am still using the big bottle of Future I bought 12+ years ago. ![]()
I’ve had no problems with lacquer over waterborne acrylics at all, never an issue. I can’t speak for lacquer over the alcohol type acrylics, like Tamiya acrylic, as I won’t do that. I think the one time I did I later ( months down the road) I found the finish all cracked back to the primer. So for me that’s a no go and never revisited. But I put clear lacquer over waterborne acrylics routinely without issue.I’ve put clear lacquers over Vallejo, craft paints, artist acrylics, craft paints and Createx colors, all have been fine.
Defining “acrylic”, thus is key, at least in my little world..
On a second note here, while I put down full wet coats of gloss clear, I just very lightly mist on flats. The less the better. In fact if you lightly mist a coat of even gloss clear, it will tend to flatten out, assuming standard speed thinner is used.
I use Testor’s DullCote (lacquer) over acrylics of all types, enamels, lacquers, even oils. I have never had any problems with it.
I use the rattlecan, too, don’t bother with the airbrush to apply it.
Best regards,
Brad
Nothing says flat like Testors Dull Coat.
The Alclad stuff came today, so far looking good I think. Praying it will continue to work. You can see the figure on my Michael Wittmann 1/16 thread.
I know I’m late to the party, but, and this is a big but (no pun intended, unless of course, you want it to be
) - If you live where you can get it, a little dab of Golden Super Matte Medium in the acrylic coating of your choice would be a great way to knock the shine off your model. It doesn’t take much and you can use it with whatever gloss coat you have now. Or you could mix it with GAC 100 or 200 and thin it with water until it’s airbrushable. In either case it’s a great product that is very versatile. HTH
