I’m building Tamiya’s FW190 F8, kit, and I just got done with the painting of the desert scheme. I have it overcoated with future so I can apply the decals, and so the oil wash for the panel lines will flow nicely without “staining” flat paint. When done with decails and oil wash, should I still apply a matte finish overall? If so which one would be recommended so as not to harm the future OR the oils, and without beading up?
I normally use Clear Gloss lacquer under decals so I’m not sure what to use over Future. It’s a simple matter to spray Flat (or Semi-gloss depending on how weathered the a/c is) Clear Lacquer. It’s probable that Clear Flat Lacquer will work fine over the Future but I would do a test section first. Perhaps even on a small sheet of styrene just to be sure.
“Yes” to the first question… As for the second, I used Testor’s Dullcoat more often than not, but it got too expensive for the amount of paint you get, but most any clear flat will do, even spray varnish… The Best places to find clear flat finishes that give you a better price per ounce, go to an arts & crafts store and buy any of the clear flats or even the fixative used for sealing pastel chalk drawings…
If you have a beading problem using water-based flats like Tamiya’s, thin it with rubbing alcohol instead of water… In fact, if open a bottle of most of these so-called “special thinners for acryllics” and sniff it, you’ll smell rubbing alcohol…
Well my curiosity about the beading is from the oil paints used in the panel lines. Theoretically a water based flat would bead up anywhere that had any oil paint residue on it. Considering I may be adding some streaking with them, it could cause an issue.
I may go with testors dullcoat and mist it on so as not to affect the future. I’ve tried Gunze Sango but I was unimpressed with it. Still gave a rather glossy finish.
I use Polly Scale Flat, an acrylic, over Future with oil washes all the time. As long as the oil wash has dried for about 48 hours, you won’t have any problems & Polly Scale Flat is a dead flat finish. Only problem I have is availability. The Hobby Shops in my area that used to stock it no longer do, so I’m forced into mail order mode.
Testors Dullcote, a lacquer, can safely be used over Future as long as the Future is fully cured. But Dullcote tends to yellow over time which will be noticeable, especially over White or Light Grey.

[#ditto] Polly Scale clears are my clear of choice as well.
I use Humbrol Mattcote as my standard matt varnish. Works just fine over oil washes and panel lines:
Available in pretty much every LHS in Europe, maybe not so much on your side of the Pond.
Cheers,
Chris.
