Masking tape for Armor

Hay, whats the best tape to use to mask of parts on Tanks, that will not leave a sticky residu on it after you have painted and everything, I’ve preaty much runind my abrams after useing scotch tape and inter tape, the stuff that its like a off white color and it ripes real easy.I need some help on this one, and would also differant thinkness make paint build up more when you spray? I’m also puting Anti Skid on the Abrams right now, and made it’s the fact that I put two coats on, but it sems kind think to me?

I use Tamiya Masking tape, excellent stuff, good sealing but low tack

Howdy. I use either drafters tape, which is a masking tape you can get at any art store. Tamiya makes a great masking tape that comes in many widths. In my experience the drafters tape works as well as Tamiya and is much more cost effective. The 3m blue painters tape is not too bad although alittle stiff to my liking.

As far as paint build up, it only matters if you put on more paint. Several light coats won’t build up and will cover better that a couple thick ones.

You didn’t say what you were masking or how you were painting, I.E. brush, AB or can.

[#ditto] Same for me…

silly putty works great

Silly putty, Tamiya tape, and 3M bule painters tape. I like them all.

You can always try Non Pourse surgical tape. Its a low tac tape that does not bleed under and it is easy to work with. Comes in 3 different sizes.
Its made by 3M and you can find it at your local Hospital Supply store or Pharmacy.

Hi,

Picking up a really old thread here.

I know a lot of people use tamiya tape and silly putty to mask, but…

How long can you leave the tape on before it leaves a residue? I started masking the camo on a Leopard 2A6 using tamiya tape, life got in the way, I went back to masking probably 2 weeks later. I lifted a piece and “DAMN IT,” it had left a nasty residue. The green undercoat I’m working on is airbrushed tamiya acrylic - quite delicate.

So I bought some silly putty (albeit knockoff silly putty - but it’s exactly like the brand name stuff, I swear!). I put a gob of that on my matt acrylic finish and “blaugh” a big grease stain appeared instantly!

Thoughts?

I’ve been modeling for some time but this is my first airbrush project.
