masking help

man i am having a rough week. i have another problem. just finished painting my komet. and the tape has pulled chunks of paint off. i am using tamiya masking tape on model master acryl. what is the best thing to use for masking to avoid peeling paint off. thanks

Sounds to me like you have a primer problem. Did you rub down/wash the plastic?
Did you use a primer? If you did both then I can’t see why it happened. Sounds like the best thing to do may be to strip off the paint & start again, that way you’ll get a good smooth finish.

That’s one of the major reasons I only use Enamels. Assuming you properly cleaned and primed the model prior to painting, the Tamiya tape shouldn’t have pulled the paint as it isn’t very aggressive. However there are low-tac tapes available that are even less aggressive than Tamiya. Art or Craft stores will often stock Artists’ tape or Drafting tape that has a little less adhesive quality than Tamiya. Also the Painters tape found in Hardware Stores works well. For extreme low-tac, use Post-it note paper.

I think Albert has got it pegged. I use all sorts of paints - acrylics, enamels and lacquers and as long as I do a good job cleaning the plastic I’ve never had a peeling problem.

i did not use a primer. i have never had a problem with enamels before. should i prime all the time?

Probably. The acrylic paint needs something to ‘grip’ onto. Normally you can get away with it using enamels, not so with this stuff. You either need to ‘key’ the surface, by making it slightly rough, or use a primer. I use spray can primer meant for painting plastic parts on cars, it’s cheap, lasts ages, easy to rub down, the grey colour shows any flaws on the model & no messy airbrush to clean after use. Oh, & it’s good for use with acrylic & enamels, though that may vary with brands, check on scrap plastic first.
Also, make sure you clean the model before painting to get rid of release agent & grease.
Good luck
