Can masking tape of any kind be used to effectively mask an aircraft to create a three-color camouflage pattern? Can is be used to create the curves needed?

Welcome to the Forum [#welcome]. Sure, masking tape can be used. You want to use a low tac variety, not the ordinary masking tape. I use Scotch Drafting tape, Tamiya tape & Blue Painters tape, depending on the application.

You might want to consider using silly putty or Play Do for a mask to get the complex curves on hard edged camoulflage. It will be paint friendly and is very easy to work with. Masking tape is still a vital component to all modelers’ inventory, you just can’t live without it. On the P40 in my sig, I didn’t use any masks, just a really good airbrush, (Badger 360).

Some times I use lint roller tape. I trace the pattern that I want on it, then I cut it out, apply, and spray away. Use the cheap lint roller king, it has less tack!

Hello , also if you paint your aircraft with a natural metal finish then coat it with future ,when you carefully lift the masking tape (carefully)you will have paint chipping.Nothing looks like paint chipping better than real paint chipping.I do all of mine like this even if the chipping is very subtle.Looks great . good luck Lonnie
For masking camouflage, I use a technique I found in an issue of FSM called “Easy Camouflage”. I make a scale photo copy of the instructions with the painting diagrams, cut out the pieces, and tape them onto the model. Usually I’ll use masking tape rolled up to pull the paper up away from the kit a couple millimeters to get a good soft edge. Here’s an example of this technique after it’s done:
