Marine War Dogs

Hi Guys,

I’m thinking of doing a diorama about Marine war dogs in PTO. I have a German Shepard figure but, I need to know What colors I would I need to paint it?

Thanks

Tom

Not to be saracstic but look a a picture of a German Shepherd and see what colors it is?? Black / brown / tan?

I’m Bronto on this. Most war dogs from World War II were donated by dog owners from across the country, therefore, there wouldn’t be a ‘standard’ color or whatever. Dogs vary in color any way, even with in the breed. There are black and red-brown, black and tan, black and cream, black and silver, all black, and I’ve seen all white Shepherds as well. So this comes down to your preference really.

Doberman Pinschers (sp?) were also used but they fell out of favor because they were not easy to adapt to different handlers.

Guys thanks for your help. I know what color a German shepard is. I’ new at painting figures. I like to know what vallejo colors to use to attain those colors.

Thanks

Try a base of tan, with some rust, then pattern w/ black and some subtle highlights w/ off-white…then yellow-gold detail for the eyes and wet those and the nose…

Uh…dog colors?

Thanks for the advice. I just wanted a base I could start with.

Jenn said “Paint her pink”…[:-^]…[;)]

also, if you want your dog to be a bit older, add some white to the snout and back.

I’ve had Shepherds my whole life and have three now. They come in a wide range of colors and markings. You could really go with anything you like. Here’s my youngest Bounty.

Wow, that looks real—what colors did you use?

I can’t paint figures anything close to that. LOL

Guys, Thanks for all the advice. I’m going to try to do my best using all the information that I have recieved. When I finished my diorama I will post it for your feedback.

Thanks again

Tom

Check out this 1 from my Buddy Marc over on The M.M. Site

Realism . It’s amazing the way he painted in the stink, ain’t it?

“Yeah Indy…he’s a regular German Shepard Paine…”[:D]

I’d say that pile of leavings was a mix of English Uniform and Chocolate Brown, with a touch of Hull Red. Looks like he went for a '92 Alpo, but I think a '93 IAMS would have been more accurate.

[(-D] you have, my day, made

…finished off with a touch of glosscoat…
