Since it is only a drawing and there is no actual photo of the plane, I was wondering whether this would have been the “proper” way to build a 2seater out of a Spit, since al of the later build 2seater Spits do have the second seat in the rear of the plane.
I can imagine that the position of the front seat, as pictured, would not have been very ideal, is it?
First of all, the main fuel tanks were located in that position, leaving only the optional 29 gallon fuel tank behind the pilot seat eventually combined with an auxiliary tank, or some other setup.
Secondly, the view from the front seat is even worse then that of the pilot (assuming that the pilot seat would be the one in the back).
So, I wonder to what purpose this plane would have been build. I can only assume that it would have been used as a trainer.
Is there anyone out there who could shed a little bit more light on this plane?
That is an odd arangement… My first thought was where does the guy in front put his feet? The firewall is pretty close. If they could squeeze a person in that space, I don’t see where they could fit flight controls too.
