ok so how do you guys go about making mud and snow for your models. i have an idea for my priest-kangaroo but i have no clue on how repoduce mud or snow.
GA, for snow I use the woodland scenic stuff you can find it at most lhs.
For mud I mix real fine soil thats been sifted so that it’s almost feals like powder with white glue and water till it looks like mud.Add some raw umber craft paint ,the stuff you find at the craft store’s to give it a darker color then spread it on let it set for about twenty thirty min. then add foot print’s tire track’s and so on.It should dry completly in about twentyfour hour’s.After it has dried give it a coat of gloss. Hope I could help out and good luck.
For mud I use water, rubbing alcohol, talcum powder, and baking powder/soda, and paint. Talcum powder gives substance to ti and the baking powder/soda adds texture for rougher mud.
for mud I use ground up pastels, static grass for texture, elmers glue and a little earth coloured tamiya paint. I vary the mixtures depending on the look im after
for snow i use microballons
…Good luck
Dave
All good suggestions, just depends on what type of muddy terrain yer armor is traversing.
Sorry, fantacmet, I have to disagree in the STRONGEST WAY POSSIBLE:
NEVER, EVER USE BAKING SODA FOR MODELING PURPOSES!!!
NEVER, NEVER, NEVER!!!
Did I mention “NOT EVER!!!”!!!
There have been threads on ths before, and gosh, I certainly don;t want to have to retype the whole story, but if you want to read the warnings and testimonials from those who have had the nigtarish probelms that Baking soda will give you, enter “DON’T USE BAKING POWDER FOR SNOW” into the “Search” box at the top left of the column there–you really should take a look at it, anyone who still uses this thrice-debunked method for siulating snow or mud, or even rust. You’re just asking for heartache! [sigh][BH]
thanks for the info guys. i have a system coming in from mig productions they have come out with a mud and snow. to make life so much easier. not to bad i the price tag either. i have only order the mud system and will get the snow later.
[#ditto] I think all good groundwork starts with celluclay…In my last dio, I used a base of celluclay with some MiG pigs and water-based paint, static grass and some micro-balloons from CD for snow, much finer than Scenic Woodlands snow…to give it a wet-look, brush (or spray) on a gloss varnish (not FUTURE)…
doog, have just read your article, and thanks for the warning. While some people might get away with it, i think its better to be safe. Luckly i only have one kit thats been done with bakeing soda, which i think will be getting stripped off and re done when i get the chance.
For ground surface mud i use celluclay which is mixed with paint before i apply it. For the mud applied to vehicles i use talc mixed with brown paint then apply it like a paiste, i fine it hangs very well.
Think i am going to give the woodland scenics snow a try.
Thanks again for the warning.
Glad that you’ve researched that thread, Bish–you’ve just saved yourself a lot of heartache! [:D]
Woodland Scenics’ stuff is great!
the way I make mud caked on to a tank or other veical is by useing Tam putty and brown paint, wood land seinics grass and fine sand all mixed to gether and then put it on the spots I wont it to look mudy and when it drys you’ve got caked mud!
