making clear plastic

Hi everyone.

In my model, the nav lights are covered by a clear plastic. But the model part is not so transparent as it is very thick.so I made my own part by warming up a piece of plastic, inserting the actual part in the heated plastic and the plastic will form up.The problem is that with this technique, the plastic part I have made is slighty bigger than the actual part. How can I resolve this?

Andrew

HI Andrew

Reduce the original by sanding and polishing before moulding

or

Mould as you have done and make a copy by painting the inside of your copy with a release agent vaseline/cooking oil etc and stuffing the copy with Milliput or similar and reducing in size as above when set then remoulding.

or

making a mould from a reduced master and moulding in clear polyester resin, the mould you pour the resin into can be made simply by pushing your master into plastacine etc

Hope this helps

Gary

Thanks Gary. It doesn’t sound easy.
