Magnifying lamp ideas?

Hi folks,

Trying to get back into model making, and I’m finding that my eyesight isn’t what it used to be… I’m looking for recommendations for a clamp-on (or heavy base) magnifying task light. I took a quick look back through this section and someone mentioned an Ott-Lite. I checked into these but they’re kinda spendy. Or are they SO GOOD that they’re worth it? Also, how much magnification should I look for? Incandescent or fluorescent bulb? Any suggestions welcome!

Thanks!

Ive got one of those ones that clamp on the side of the bench it has the round floresect bulb i bought mine at a place called pay and save ownd by chekerauto parts if you dont have a store close then try office max ive seen them there for around 40 bucks. hope this helps.

Ditto, except I bought it somewhere else. You want the fluorescent bulb as they put off less heat.

Same here. Bought mine at Office Depot for about $30. Put in whatever bulb you want. Its great for seeing fine detail for those of us who are aging prematurely [:D]

My advice would be to check EEEEvilbay.

I purchased three of the small Ott-lite magnifier lamps from Ebay a short time ago for less than $110 shipped. A SPECTACULAR deal.

While the $110 seems high, these lights retail for anywhere from $70 to $130 a piece. (funny, the highest price is directly from the manufacturer’s website…)

I use one, my girlfriend uses one and my father now uses one, and we all three love them. I am actually looking at getting one more for my hobby desk; either another small Task Lamp or the larger, clamp-on FlexArm lamps.

Here is an ebay link to the Task Lamp:

I tend to use the following 2 items the most:

1.) Helping hands with attached magnifying glass
2.) Hear worn magnifying glasses(different amplifications) with build in light.

Been considering on and off for a few years now one of those desklights with the build in magnifying lens but never seem to get out and buy one. [:I]

Check out your local yard and garage sales - I picked up my magnification lamp a few years ago at a garage sale for 5 bucks - uses a 60 watt bulb with a 6 " lens and clamps to the edge of the bench

I bought mine at wallyworld for 6.99 It uses a 60w bulb and has been really useful.

I have one of the Helping hands with attached magnifying glass but do not use it, I have found the best is a desk lamp with a day light bulb & Hear worn magnifying glasses(different amplifications) with build in light.
I can now do the fine lines & paint the faces on 1/35.

Yeah, I have to get me one of them too. My vision has started to wane a bit; sad considering I’m already blind as a bat at distance, and now the close up vision is going too. The Ott lites are pretty pricey (although I like that it puts out light identical to “daylight”) but they look a little small for me, and I found nothing at Home depot, so I’ll probably pick something up at office max/whatever. I think the headgear would be more comfy though, so maybe I’ll wait for that, combined with a nice fluorescent lamp. Just another purchase on the list…
