Magnifying glasses/goggles.

I have recently returned to modelling after many years and now need glasses for reading and close up work.

I have found that for very small items i can not see them very well.In a couple of vids i have seen guys wearing magni glasses/googles/visors.Do you wear your own glasses plus the magni or do you not need to.

Also are these good for your eyes.do they weaken your eyes further?

I only ask because i needed to add indiviual rivets to a kit and once cut from the kit sprue i could not see what was cut end what was top of rivet.Darn this old age!!!

I use my Optivisor both with and without my regular glasses.

Use of properly set up magnification will not weaken your eyes. Working with insufficient light will (your eyes also become less photosensitive with age.)

“You only have two choices: getting older or getting dead.” [#toast]

I’d cast my recommendation for an OptiVisor. Though I don’t have one, one is in my near future…I’m getting tired of this:

Seriously, good light and a good pair of magifiers is crucial when getting older more experienced as a modeler. You need to find what works for you. For years I was uncomfortable using anything except the MkI Eyeball. Now I rely more and more on my collection of glasses, magnifiers and lamps to assist me. Especially when some of that PE is stuff isn’t any bigger than a fleas [censored]. [;)]

This one works for me. I’ve got the visor but quit using it. Too fussy to fool with.

That’s what I have too!

Gerald! That photo of you with all your magnifiers is priceless![(-D] A ‘third hand’ won’t help you there!

I agree…with age: Light, light and more light! I use one of the grey optivisors with a swing out eye loup attached. Fresh into a modeling session, I am fine without eyeglasses…if it’s a marathon session…I need the glasses beneath the visor.

I’ve worn glasses since I was 36. Visiting my Mom one day she saw me reading the baseball box scores in the paper. I was holding the page at ARM’S LENGTH in order to read the print! I didn’t even realize it! That was 18 years ago!

I use reading glasses to magnify when I work up close.

I have a pair of 1.5x for “regular” magnification and a pair of 2.5x for really close up.

I bought these from Harbor Freight and they are very nice.

I don’t know if they carry them any longer though.

I can buy magnifying glasses at a dollar store…for a dollar. Just FYI

[#ditto][swg]

are you near sighted? I actually take my glasses OFF and bring the part close to my face…presto! 5X magnification. Just dont poke your eyebally with the Xcto knife

I picked up a pair of 3x magnifying glasses. I have great lighting at my bench and these cheap 2.99 glasses really do the trick.

Guys you can buy an optivisor with 2 magnifation powers and a loop for $7.00 at Harbor Freight, oh and it also has built in lights on both sides of the headband. I have had one for about 25 yrs. and just bought a second one for a backup. I can’t build without this invaluable tool.

It may look like an Optivisor…but it isn’t even close in quality of optics or durability. Ya git watt U pay for. These inferior knockoffs are partly to blame for our trade imbalance and landfills filled with the cheap crap we discard.[tdn]

I’ll support the folks at Donegan Optical![tup]
