Mad Fokker Day..!

You may have heard that on 8 August, several members of those Forums will be attempting to build a Tiger in a day. Granted, it’s only a 1/72 kit, but all the same, good luck to them.

This give me the idea of another one-day Group Build, this time with an aircraft kit that is at the same time easy and cheap to find, easy to build, even possibly easy to paint. Also it is one of the most famous aircraft ever. I’m talking about Revell’s diminutive 1/72 Fokker Dr.1…

There are two kits of the famed triplane by Revell, one that dates from… a long time ago, and one that was released only a year ago, and which, I can assure you, is a little gem. Of course, other 1/72 Dr.1 are eligible, those of ESCI, and Eduard for instance…

I’m proposing that we build this little beauty on Sunday 17th of October 2004, to ‘coincide’ with the 87th (!) anniversary of the aircraft operational debut in 1917.

It can be done in a day. There’s very little rigging involved with this design, and some of the colour schemes are dead easy (overall while, overall black, …). Al;l in all a great intro into WWI modeling!

And by mid-October, everyone should have been able to locate the kit and, why not, done some research into more elaborate paint schemes…

So, who’s in it?

Domi

Hmmm… Sounds luike an interesting idea! And there’s a 1/72 Dr. 1 in my LHS! Lemmie think about this one… Probably yes, but I’ll see if funds and time allow. [:D]

Aaah! Well done, Shrikes. I hope many more will follow your steps!

What’s the line from Young Frankenstein? Something like this,

“IT…JUST…MIGHT…WORK!”

I think I like this one. How does a one-day build work? Is it a 24hour period? Does the box have to stay sealed until the official start time? Other rules for a one-day build?

Lets see, Budget Group Build ends 10/31/04, Mustang Ranch GB ends 12/31/04, BOTB GB starts 11/1/04…hmmmm…

I’m in!

That’s the Spirit too, Dan…! Glad you’re in. As to the rules, I do not know. We’ll make them over the next few days as things progress. I’m open to suggestions. If the box must remain sealed until 17 October, I’m in trouble already…! But I promise NOT to remove bits from the sprues until 00:01am on that day (GMT for me! - I’ll have a few hours of work before you guys in the US can start!)

It’ll be kinda hard to have all the people working on the same kit at the same time GMT, wouldn’t it? How about, you can start on it anytime on the said date and then complete it in 24 hours?

Hmmm… if we can’t remove the bits from the sprues, can we paint them on the sprues? [:p] Hehehe…

Shrikes, people can start when it’s 00:01am wherever they are.

OK…my Revell Fokker kit, photo-etch and resin upgrades are all ordered and should be here next Wednesday! (just kiddin’ no PE or resin)[:)]

Dan, I’m sure Eduard have some PE sets for this Revell kit…!

If I can find the kit and can bring myself to build a 1/72 kit then I’m in. It sounds like a bit of fun. It’ll be my first go at a WW1 aircraft so it should be interesting too. I’ll probably buy the kit and forget all about the build, then start it on october 27th when I remember about it. So someone will have to remind me.

Daniel, welcome aboard and don’t worry, we’ll remind you!

Well, at this stage there are 11 possible members taking part in this folly…

Who else is in…?!

I’ve now created an entry in the Group Build Forum with pics and links to get you started in your search/research…

you can count me in!

Nice to see you joining in, Ghettochild…! The more the merrier!

I’ll give it a whirl too, pardon the expression. Is the Dr1 one of those things that propels itself through the air and chatters excitedly when it gets near an enemy? [:p]

Were there any pink Dr1’s? My daughter, who is three, likes pink.

You got that right, Larry! And welcome aboard. If the little Miss Larry_Dunn wants a pink Dr.1, I think we should let you do it for her!

Most Dr.1 still retained their original factory camouflage of light blue overal, with the upper and side surfaces featuring heavy streaking of what looks like two different green colours (a medium green a bit like Humbrol’s #30 and a darker green). Adding paint onto this fabric only meant a heavier aicraft and reduced performances…

However, the Dr.1 is associated with bright colors and there were many examples featuring overal solid colors such as white and black, or the use of various colors to cover the whole airframe (black & white, medium blue and white,…). I’d say most Dr.1 did retain at least a part of the blue/green/dark green camouflage, upon which were painted some specific markings. Manfred von Richtofen’s Dr.1s (he flew several) were apparently never all red, but this is still open to debate. Most pics I have of Richtofen near any Fokker Triplane apperars to show aircraft devoid of any special markings though…
