M88A1

A few years back I put together the M88 tank retriever offered by AFV. I’m thinking about buying the A1 by Academy . However, before I do that I was wondering if its worth it? It’s hard to notice the difference in the two even though there are.

Frank

Haven’t seen an Academy version. I think it is the AFV Club M88A1. The differences are minor. A1 version has an added access panel and a few other bits for the APU in the right side of hull. Also does not come with some other bits such as the gun shield in the M88 Vietnam era kit. The rest of the kit is basically the same.

Here is a build article for the M88A1 model.

Thanks for the info and link. Your right, AFV Club puts out both the M88 and the A1. Also noticed in my research that Revell sells the M88A1G. I assume the (G) stands for Germany.

What a great AFV. Please build soon!

building a recovery diorama ? or just the vehicle ??? anyway enjoy your building

I’ve got both the AFV Club M88A1 and the Revell M88A1G. Exact same kit inside the box, but Revell includes a PE fret for the German style boom baskets. There is also German style machine guns. The AFV kit was tan and the Revell kit is green.

My Revell kit includes the Nam era .50 cal gun shield.

Building the vehicle only. Have a ways to go in turning out a decent kit before moving on to dioramas. At this point I’m strictly “out of the box” guy. I have taken some baby steps in modifying one of my models. I took a M923 and made it into a M931. I have tried to post an image of it… It’s my first attempt - so please forgive me if it does not work. Well with fingers crossed - here goes…

P.S.

Just figured out my problem. [swg]. I clicked on my first link and small image turned into big image. Guess thats why it’s call it a "thumbnail.[banghead]

Since I’m doing so well making an idiot of myself, thought I might as well ask this question.

What does PE stand for?. I have seen this acronym used throughout this forum but have not been able to figure out it meaning.

Frank

PE is Photo Etched detail sets. They are sheets of metal, usually brass, that have all sorts of small bits and pieces to add detail to your models. I personally don’t use them unless they come with the kit. I find that I can usually make the detail parts myself out of sheet plastic and I think they are way over priced.

Have to agree with you there Arty.
